Sony Xperia U Review
Sony mobiles have a very strong portfolio in the mobile market, but lately, the company has been working on its Xperia range of smartphones. In the Xperia menu, Sony Xperia U is one of the most impressive devices that have been released by Sony mobiles so far. This phone sports striking features that are not only user friendly, but are also attractive. Starting with the major features, Sony Xperia U comes with 3.5 inches Reality Display that has been powered with well-known Sony Mobile BRAVIA engine. This screen is utterly ideal for watching movies and images in sharp clarity. This 3.5 inches of LED-backlit LCD, capacitive touch screen has a resolution of 480 x 854 pixels and support multitouch of up to four fingers, which is impressive. The Timescape user interface further enhances the working experience for the user on Xperia U.
Under the hood, Sony Xperia U comes with a dynamic dual core processor running at a fast speed of 1.5 GHz and powered by the Android OS, Android 2.3 Gingerbread planning to be upgraded to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. The dual core processor is supported by STE U8500 Chipset and DB8500 GPU. The 512 MB of RAM supports the smooth functioning Android operating system. On the other hand, the 4 GB of internal memory space could be used for storing huge amount of games, songs, videos, images and applications. But sadly, Sony Xperia U misses out on microSD card slot. Therefore, the user won’t be able to expand the memory any further. The remarkable 5 megapixels of rear camera is accompanied by autofocus, LED flash, geo-tagging, touch focus, face and smile detection and 3D sweep panorama, image stabilization, while secondary VGA camera is perfect for making video calls and clicking self-portraits without any trouble. The rear camera is also capable of recording 720p of videos at the rate of 30 frames per second with continuous video light facility.
The connectivity features of Sony Xperia U don’t disappoint the user at all. The handset comes with Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, GPRS (up to 107 kbps speed) and EDGE (up to 296 kbps speed). The users can also transfer the data to and fro to other corresponding devices without any trouble via Bluetooth with A2DP and microUSB port version 2.0. On the whole, Sony Xperia U is an impressive Android smartphone, but the only disappointment here is the lack of microSD card slot and high pricing.
Overall Review
Sony Xperia U is one of the mid range devices of the xperia series. The device is very attractive and has an elegant display powered by the LED-backlit LCD capacitive touchscreen technology. The screen works at a resolution of 16 million colors and gives 480 by 854 pixels. The device has sharp edges and is rectangular in shape and curvy from behind which is attractive to look at but not as easy to hold like the new Samsung Galaxy SIII or the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 which is inspired by a pebble and is constructed to fit the palms of the user. It is available in the colors of black and white where the bottom part of the device being exchangeable with pink, black, white and yellow. Apart from the look, the technical specifications of the device are decent too with the camera being pretty good offering a resolution of 5 megapixels. There is the LED flash feature along with the auto focus facility. There is also a secondary VGA camera. The Internet is also very fast with backing from Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi hotspot. The device comes with the Android Gingerbread operating system but now the device will feature the Ice Cream Sandwich operating system. The device is very fast and comes with a 1 GHz dual core processor. Battery is also very formidable with 1320 mAh.
User Interface and UI functionality
Sony Xperia U is a neat and sharp looking device with a rectangular shape which is sturdier than its earlier launches. The device is heavier than its previous handsets and also as compared to the rest of the smartphones out there but the device is more robust and can take a few blows during rough usage. The 3.5 inch screen is backed by a resolution of 480 by 854 pixels and works at a pixel density of 280ppi. The screen is powered by the Bravia Engine, a technology that we see in a LCD screen which gives the device a very elegant display indeed. It is protected by the scratch resistant glass and can be interacted with by using up to 4 fingers.
Multimedia features
Sony Xperia U comes with tons of multimedia features like the music player that gives the user a terrific experience with its Sony 3D surround sound technology. The user can listen to his or her favourite songs through the loudspeakers or through the earphones that can be attached to the device with the help of a 3.5mm jack. The music can be heard in various formats including MP3, eAAC+, WMA and WAV. There is also the video player that lets the user watch and enjoy videos in high definition with the help of the MP4, H.263, H.264 and WMV formats. The user can also enjoy radio FM facilities that makes sure that the user can access all the popular radio stations and record the songs as and when he or she requires to do so.
Pictures and Video quality
The 5 megapixel camera that Sony Xperia U offers allows the user to click wonderful pictures and that at a resolution of 2592 by 1944 pixels which is pretty formidable. There is the LED flash facility that makes sure that the user can click pictures with clarity even when the natural light is not that bright and so that the pictures don’t end up too gloomy. The auto focus feature gives precision to your photography so that the pictures clicked by the user are precise and accurate. Other features offered by the camera includes Geo-tagging, touch focus, face and smile detection, 3D sweep panorama and image stabilization. There is also a secondary VGA camera facilitates video chatting.
Internet support
Sony Xperia U is powered by the Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Wi-Fi hotspot, DLNA which is its biggest strength as the Internet accessing is really fast and the user can log on to the web from remote locations with ease and comfort. The user can then browse through the web, access FaceBook, Twitter or any other popular web sites or even download data including songs, games, images and videos.
Internal and External Memory
Sony Xperia U is backed by the internal memory of 8GB out of which 4GB is accessible for the user. The user can then keep a large collection of data including songs, games, images and videos. There is no slot for expanding the memory which is drawback with the device. The RAM is pretty decent with 512 MB allowing the user to access the resources of the system at a quick pace.
Applications and Gaming
Sony Xperia U is powered by the Android Ice Cream Sandwich operating system which allows the user to choose from a huge pool of gaming and applications that would keep the user engaged and entertained. The device also has lots of games and applications that are preinstalled in the device.
Battery Backup
Sony Xperia U runs on the standard lithium ion battery of 1320 mAh that makes sure that the user can operate on the device for a longer duration without his or her entertainment being cut short. The battery further gives the user a talk time of up to Up to 6 h 36 min (2G) / Up to 5 h 36 min (3G) along with a standby time of Up to 260 h (2G) / Up to 472 h (3G).
Connectivity Offered
Various data connectivity features offered by Sony Xperia U includes the bluetooth facility that lets the user exchange data with other devices at a fast pace where the data exchanged may include music files, games, images and videos. The user can also exchange data with computers or laptops through the USB cable that lets the user charge the device as well through the same procedure. The device also offers the GPRS and EDGE facility that makes sure that the user can navigate to the desired location with ease.
Compare
Sony Xperia U when compared to the HTC One V has sharper screen with the former coming powered by the Bravia Engine technology but the latter provides a microSD card slot that Xperia U does not.
News Updates
Sony Xperia U is one of the mid range experia devices and has been reasonably successful in the Indian market. Earlier it was Samsung Galaxy Ace and Samsung Galaxy Ace Plus that was taking the majority of market but with Xperia U, customers have a wide pool of choices. The device is pretty attractive and is actually better looking than Samsung Galaxy Ace and Ace plus.
