Sony Ericsson Xperia ray Review
Overall Review
Sony Xperia Ray has a 480 x 854 pixels resolution but its screen is a lot smaller, at 3.3 inches, which means a much higher per pixel density is given. As a consequence, colours on the whole look fantastic and the clarity is incredible. A range of colours, including gold, black, pink and white, is available in case of Sony Xperia Ray and it caters well to one and all. There are issues with tapping function of the screen and the soft keys, which get slightly frustrating. Also, the Sony Xperia Ray is a fingerprint and dust magnet. However, with Android 2.3.4 Gingerbread and Sony’s Timescape UI, some pretty animations for moving icons and stuff, everything is smooth and Sony Xperia Ray performs great. It is a very small device, but overall it displays a stellar performance.
User Interface and UI functionality
Android is the world's most-used mobile phone operating system and is reaching a saturation point now. There is a need for innovation to bring something new to its user interface.
Sony Xperia Ray brings nothing new but the Timescape UI to the users. This overlay mainly puts a widget for the social media updates on the front page, or elsewhere. It's very versatile and allows users to add some additional services too. Notifications can be periodically updated and then swipe through. SMS/MMS and missed calls can also be handled here too.
On Timescape, there isn’t any inbuilt image and web browser to let users view all the Facebook and Twitter content in one place. But luckily, on Sony Xperia Ray one can remove Timescape and just customise the homescreen with better widgets, for instance, Favourites Quick Dial.
A range of themes is there to pick from, but they all seem like the colored variations of the same pattern. One can also reorder apps via the app drawer and create folders. There are four shortcuts on the homescreen at the bottom of the display and those can be easily reassigned whichever way you see fit by long-pressing the icon. One could also install some nice new live wallpapers. There are five home screens and more can’t be added. The 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor and 512 MB of RAM helps all the way in these processes.
Multimedia features
Sony Xperia Ray is pretty standard Android smartphone that boasts decent media features. Nothing exciting or extremely new actually, but the strength of the phone is how clearly one can watch HD videos on its small display.
The music player is mostly like the one found on other Android handsets. It works well and does its job well. The gallery app looks slick, generates albums automatically, tilts in line with the accelerometer and even manages to change the background of the entire gallery. The new thing is that Facebook albums also co-exist here and its icons are new too. There's a standard pre-installed YouTube app also.
Apart from standard Android stuff, Sony has given its own media goodies. For example, there is Friend’s Music & Videos app that collates all the recommended videos or music by friends on Facebook. One can also listen to radio on this phone.
Pictures and Video quality
Despite of its small size, Sony Xperia ray packs in an awesome 8.1 megapixels camera on the rear. The front facing camera is 1.3 megapixels and as expected, it is average. The results are produced by the primary photo shooter are impressive. There is instant auto focus and shutter speed is very fast. Also, the level of detail with or without natural light is extremely impressive. The camera records in 720p and the shutter speed and picture capabilities are the true performer in case of videos also.
The viewfinder does it job well. It fills the screen and subjects look clear and vivid. There isn’t any lag or flickering even while watching a high-definition movie, probably due to the Reality Display. There are three scene modes: Normal, Smile Detection and Automatic and the Automatic yields best results. There’s a self-timer in the camera too.
However, there are some issues also. The way this camera deals with the light is pretty inappropriate. Sony Xperia Ray can’t decide what most appropriate amount of light is. There isn’t a camera button and one need to tap the screen to click a picture. In general, issues arise when noise appears in low light settings and flash isn't used, and pictures looked better displayed on the phone than on a computer.
Internet support
Sony Xperia Ray gives a full-blown Internet experience to its users. This small device is second to none when it comes to browsing. It comes with Flash integration and even videos on websites load on this phone without any hitch and that too blisteringly fast. On Wi-Fi also, the speed is unhindered. Web pages load blazing fast and only took marginally longer over a 3G Internet connection.
Web pages look absolutely beautiful on the Xperia Ray's display and though one have to zoom to actually read anything on this phone, it isn’t a problem as it happens without any delay.
The standard Android web browser is used in Xperia Ray so it supports multiple windows and bookmarks and we can proudly say that Sony Sricsson has come up with a device which is at par with larger, dual-core smartphones as far as the Internet speeds are concerned.
Internal and External Memory
Inside the Sony Xperia Ray, there is 1GB of memory (only 300MB is available to the user) and a slot for swapping microSD cards. You only get a 4GB card in the box.
Applications and Gaming
All the usual suspects like Maps, Latitude, Places, GTalk, Gmail and Navigation Beta can be catered to on Sony Xperia Ray. And of course, being an Android handset, much more is available via the Android Market.Get Apps and Get Games offerings actually just show you a selection of recommendations that then require downloading via the Android market.Maps now support 3D scrolling which is quite an exciting add-on. Sony Xperia Ray also provides you with helpful set-up and support apps. For the business focused, there is Office Suite as standard which can edit documents.
Its nice that the bloatware is almost nil. Some awesome things like Sony’s Music and Video Unlimited, there is also Facebook, Track ID for caller ID, McAfee Security, Office Suite Pro and then there are also Sony bundled apps and games.
Battery Backup
Sony Xperia Ray has a 1500 maH battery and battery showcases a stellar performance. The small 3.3" display help in conserving battery but the Bravia engine tweaks also helps. It lasts almost 6 days on stand-by with minimal usage and amidst daily usage of web browsing and gaming, it lasts almost 24 hours on a single charge.
Connectivity Offered
Sony Xperia Ray boasts Bluetooth v.2.1 with A2DP, EDR, microUSB v2.0, DLNA and Wi-Fi hotspot like high end connectivity features.
Compare
HTC Sensation is a leading Android smartphone that has taken the tech enthusiast around the world by sheer awe. It boasts a dual-core processor, just like the Samsung Galaxy S II and has a bit larger 4.3-inch screen with the qHD (540 x 960) resolution display. It is 11.3 mm thick and still feels comfortable in the hand. HTC Sensation isn't 'thin and super light' but it's solid build quality is absolutely adorable.
Sony Xperia Ray trumped over HTC Sensation in Internet speed. Xperia Ray is actually too small for comparison with the 4.3" HTC Sensation but the hardware, camera, display, and even the speakers of this tiny tot are all excellent. But overall it’s just too small.
