The camera features facilities like autofocus, LED flash, geo-tagging, image stabilization, smile and face detection and touch focus. The music player lets the user listen to their favourite songs that are compatible with the formats MP3/eAAC+/WMA/WAV while the video player is supported by the formats MP4/H.263/H.264/WMV. Overall Review
Sony Xperia Mini looks smarter and sharper and a lot more stylish. The matte finish and rubberised coating of the back panel makes Xperia Mini very tough also. Sony has devised a new design and placed the 3.5mm headphone jack on the bottom of the phone along with the USB connector. The left side panel is left blank except for a silver strip. The top edge has the power button and volume up/down rocker plus the soft-touch camera button lies on the other edges. The proximity sensor allows users to deactivate the touchscreen while making a call. Sony Xperia Mini is obviously very small but it feels good. The Home button and the new capacitive Back and Menu buttons are large enough to be found with ease. It gets a firm grip in the hand and that turns it in to a perfectly usable smartphone.
The phone has a 3" LCD display with decent resolution and it runs the Android Gingerbread operating system whilst deriving power from a 1 GHz processor. There is enough memory of 1 GB and it further expands to 32 GB maximum. It is also a very secure phone. One can protect this phone from unauthorised use by using enforced passwords/PIN codes. The phone also supports protected access to VPN and Wi-Fi networks especially when Xperia Mini is turned into a Wi-Fi hotspot or is used as a tethered USB modem while hooked up to a laptop/PC.
On the whole, Xperia Mini looks good and performs well. This handset is a powerful small package.
User Interface and UI functionality
Sony Xperia Mini comes with a larger 3" screen and utilizes the Bravia Engine Reality display technology and a 1GHz processor. The small 3" capacitive displays runs at 320 x 480p resolution but is surprisingly bright and sharp enough so much so that the icons and text on this bright screen is easily readable even in sunlight. This implies that despite of the small screen size, the screen quality hasn’t suffered. The 3" screen is also so responsive to touch that it registers even the lightest press of fingers.
This droid handset uses the standard Sony corner-based user interface as well as the five standard Android Home screens to scroll between.
Organizing everything on Xperia Mini has become really easy. It is easy to customize each page with a customisable icon and also stick anything by dragging a shortcut here from the main applications menu. The novice part is the addition of multiple icons in the corners, so one can add up to four items in each slot. One can even add icons and shortcuts to the Home screen itself, a standard Android feature that is now available on Xperia Mini because of its larger 3 inch screen size.
It is fun to view all the widgets floating out in overview mode on two-fingered pinch of the screen and reverting back to one of the corresponding Home screen. A whole new collection of visual themes is also available exclusively for the buyers of Sony Xperia Mini. It is accessed through a long-press on the Home screen and then one can add a new background image or change the color of the menu pages. The standard Android power strip widget has been removed and that has made this phone versatile. Users can now create their own via a collection of icons. There are plenty of widgets like the fashionable weather station or the usual old Timescape social media widget. Timescape on Xperia Mini is now supporting Facebook and Twitter and you can install plug-ins to add extra functionality.
Multimedia features
The music features include FM Radio with RDS and TrackID music recognition. For thrilling audio, an audio filter technology from Sony, xLOUD Experience is on-board.
The supported audio playback formats are MP3, 3GPP, MP4, SMF, WAV, OTA, Ogg vorbis while audio recording happens in 3GPP, MP4, AMR formats. There is a 5 megapixels A/F camera with LED flash and 8x digital zoom and it comes along with capability to do 720p HD video recording.
Pictures and Video quality
Sony Xperia Mini has a 5 megapixels camera and clicks snapshots at 2592 x 1944 resolution with vivid colors and brightness. There aren't many fancy options and only standard pre-determined scene modes such as Portrait, Landscape, Night Scene, Sports and Party are only available. Xperia Mini also offers some interesting choices, especially in low-light conditions. The camera is very quick and launches in seconds to shoot off sequences of shots rapidly.
Videos recorded at 720p resolution are not very detailed. Even, the Reality Display and Mobile BRAVIA Engine feature doesn’t benefit when viewing them on Xperia Mini's screen. The viewing angle is good but except the solid frame rate, but there's nothing much to amaze the viewers. The “video editing” feature helps in editing the start and end points of recorded video clips, which is quite a likeable thing.
Internet support
Sony Xperia Mini comes with an integrated WebKit web browser with “Pan & Zoom” feature. It helps one synchronize via exchange ActiveSync, Google Sync and Facebook.
Internal and External Memory
There is 1GB of internal storage space along with RAM worth 512MB in Sony Xperia Mini. The expansion slot accepts microSD cards up to 32GB.
Applications and Gaming
All your loved apps are just a thumb’s away and can be chosen from over 250,000 apps on Google Play™ to be used on Sony Xperia Mini. There is also facility of playing 3D games on this phone.
The pre-loaded applications on the phone include Google Voice Search, GTalk, GMail, Google Calendar, Google Gallery 3D, Google Maps with Street View.
Battery Backup
Sony Xperia Mini is unlikely to let you down by its battery performance, obviously because it has a smaller screen to power. The 1200 mAh battery is, thus, understandable in a smaller unit like Xperia Mini.
Battery is good for 4.5 hours of talk time and 340 hours of standby time. In standby mode, it barely shows any power depletion for a course of a few hours. It survives a good two days of light usage from one charge and if work includes pretty heavy web browsing and camera usage, it requires refueling a second time in a day.
Connectivity Offered
The on-board connectivity features on Sony Xperia Mini include native USB tethering, WiFi and WiFi Hotspot function, Bluetooth, DLNA sharing and A-GPS, USB 2.0 and micro USB support.
For staying in touch, one can also rely upon excellent mailing capabilities of Xperia Mini. Email accounts using POP3 and IMAP4 protocols or on Microsoft Exchange Server can be accessed for maintaining sync with corporate email, calendar and contacts. Synchronization can also be directly done via direct push. Xperia Mini also facilitates easy email setup with auto-discover feature and the mails can be previewed in pane, portrait or landscape mode, as per one’s wish.
The timescape UI on Mini also comes integrated with Twitter and there is also Facebook inside Xperia 2.0.
Compare
There are certainly many more powerful Android phones in the market with bigger displays and similar price tags but Xperia Mini seems like the most admirable.
The Samsung Galaxy Mini is a good bet too because it has more internal space with 160MB storage, 384 MB of RAM and micro SD support up to 32 GB. But, the Galaxy Mini uses 3.14-inches TFT touch panel that is slightly bigger but because it has low 127 ppi, it is clear that Xperia Mini enjoys better quality screen. On the design part also, Xperia Mini is again better off. It is thus clear that Sony Xperia Mini faces minimum competition in the ultra-portable smartphone scene.
