Overall Review

Sony Ericsson XPERIA Arc, to define in two words would be “Style Stament”. And this statement could in no way be more loud and clear. The Sony Forte and the new synonym of elegance BRAVIA screen looks nothing short of spectacular and the impressive slim and fit body of the phone is exactly what a frontrunner of a brand should be like. Android v2.3 Gingerbread works great as it rules the market. It takes more than a few exceptional characters these days, and they’d better be backed by solid performance across the board. Oversights are not easily forgiven so the Sony Ericsson XPERIA Arc better stay focused on the market. They specific features that make Sony Ericsson XPERIA Arc what it is today are Quad-band GSM /GPRS/EDGE support, 3G with 7.2 Mbps HSDPA and 5.76 Mbps HSUPA, a 4.2" 16M-color capacitive LED-backlit LCD touchscreen of FWVGA resolution (480 x 854 pixels) with Sony Mobile BRAVIA engine, Android OS v2.3 Gingerbread, 1 GHz Scorpion CPU, Adreno 205 GPU, Qualcomm Snapdragon MSM8255 chipset, 512 MB RAM, 8 MP autofocus camera with LED flash and geotagging, 720p video recording at 30frames per second with continuous autofocus and stereo sound, Wi-Fi b/g/n and DLNA, GPS with A-GPS, microSD slot up to 32GB (8GB card included), Accelerometer and proximity sensor, Standard 3.5 mm audio jack, Stereo FM radio with RDS, microUSB port (charging) and stereo Bluetooth v2.1, Voice dialling, Adobe Flash 10.2 support, microHDMI port and Ultra slim body(8.7mm at its thinnest point)

User Interface and UI functionality

Sony Xperia Arc has introduced the world with 2 important changes in Sony’s grid of smartphones. The device runs on the then newest version of Android OS i.e. Android 2.3 Gingerbread, and easily gets rid of any interface caused by Mediaspace.  Sony Ericsson still has Timescape to make their products distinguishable and axing Mediascape will probably reduce the future Android update delays. That probably makes the XPERIA Arc a more balanced product than Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 software-wise and replaced it as the new face of Xperia. Android 2.3 Gingerbread has brought lots of new APIs and extended the platform’s gaming capabilities, but the interface elements haven’t been drastically transformed. And with Sony Ericsson skinning the whole thing it’s even harder to spot the differences. There are new animations when moving items around the homescreen, sorting them in folders or deleting them. There are no new wallpapers included in Gingerbread, but you can get as many as you want from the Android Market anyway. Sony Ericsson has included 24 static wallpapers and there are 11 live wallpapers too.

Multimedia features

The tradition droid Gallery stores are the images and videos of the camera, which is not exactly an updated function from Froyo to Gingerbread. The working is good, 3D effects look awesome, but the one flaw, the first of the review spotted is that unfortunately the gallery only gives a downsized version of the image. The different albums and folders appear as piles of photos, which fall in neat grids once selected. If you have online albums over at Picasa those show up as separate stacks as well. Alternatively, your photos can be sorted by date with the help of a button in the top right corner, which switches between grid and timeline view. Sharing the photos can also be done via Picasa, Email apps, Facebook, Bluetooth or MMS. There is nothing fancy about the Video player however, and which is in all senses logical because playing video is all that matters. But the phone disappoints here too as it supports only 3GP and MP4 movies. Just a positive is that the device did play a 720p movie. And the 4.2” FWVGA Reality screen is a pure joy to watch. If you re-encode your videos before hand, the XPERIA Arc can make a good video player. The music player on the XPERIA Arc is quite similar to the music section of the axed Mediascape app. The interface is laid out in four tabs for the available sorting options: all artists, all tracks, playlists and albums. The Sony Ericsson XPERIA Arc also accompanies an FM radio.

Pictures and Video quality

Here is one feature when Sony Ericsson Xperia arc can stand chest out, head held high (Didn’t really have any negatives before this though!). The device proudly boasts an 8 MP camera with single LED flash. Xperia Arc uses an Exmor R backlit sensor which, in theory, provides better low-light images. In reality the advantage of the backlit technology is marginal at best. Upon pressing the menu key you get some extra customizable options like focus mode, white balance, geo tagging and image stabilization. And not to anyone’s surprise, and because of the price that accompanies it, the XPERIA Arc also boasts face detection and smile shot. HD video recording is the buzz in the phone and camera world these days and amazingly Sony Xperia Arc does 720p recording at 30 frames per second. Sony Xperia Arc’s camcorder joins the select few with continuous autofocus.

Internet support

The then fastest and latest UI version supports Sony Ericcson Xperia Arc, 2.3.2 Gingerbread, which is the phone’s web browser, excels fantastically. Another positive is Flash 10.1 support. The user interface is pretty much nonexistent at first sight. Once the page loads, all you see is the URL bar and the bookmark button on a line at the top of the screen. Once you zoom in and pan around though even that line disappears.

Internal and External Memory

The inbuilt storage is disappointing at 320MB only, but it can be expanded to 32GB via the microSD card slot. The phone will ship with an 8GB memory card. And unlike Sony Nexus S though, there is no NFC support. A standard 3.5mm audio jack and the mini-HDMI port complete the connectivity tally. Unfortunately you’ll have to buy your own HDMI cable, it’s not included in the retail box.

Applications and Gaming

Sony Ericsson  Xperia Arc works on Android OS v2.3 Gingerbread, all the applications and games available on android market run in the device.

Battery Backup

Battery Backup of the device lasted upto 430 hours in 2G and 400 hrs in 3G in standby mode. Talkime of 7 hours is featured in both 2G and 3G modes whereas Musci can be continuously played upto 31 hours in one go in this device.

Connectivity Offered

Nothing specific is actually missing from the pack of connectivity options provided with a full connectivity options which are quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE and tri-band HSPA with download rates of up to 7.2 Mbps and upload at 5.76 Mbps. For local data transfer options like Wi-Fi (b/g/n), USB v2.0 and Bluetooth 2.1 are provided.

Compare

Sony Xperia Arc at the time when it was launch was mainly compared to Samsung Galaxy S2,both being winners in their repective strengths. Other devices which can be compared are Nokia N88 andd LG Optimus Black.
