Sony Ericsson Mix Walkman Review

Sony Ericsson Mix Walkman is a music-oriented mobile phone whose existence proves that Sony Ericsson is still keen on making some more Walkman brand phones. The musical handset has media and music features at its core and its full touch configuration is very impressive. There is a scratch-resistant TFT display screen of 3.0 inches and of capacitive type. The Sony Ericsson Mix Walkman also offers some nice connectivity options. There’s Internet access via Wi Fi which allows users to begin with their web browsing anywhere. It also has a microUSB port, Bluetooth and Internet connectivity via GPRS and EDGE networks. Opera Mini v6.1 can also be used on the device. Built-in email client lets users access their mail inbox anywhere.

The camera of Sony Ericsson Mix Walkman is marked at 3.15 megapixels rating and it easily captures stills at at 2048 x 1536 pixels. Video recording in QVGA quality is also viable but there’s isn’t any claim that results so produced are of best quality. Watching videos on the Mix Walkman is made possible by easy support for both QuickTime and 3GP formats. The Walkman player of Sony Ericsson Mix Walkman comes with benefits of Sony’s track ID music recognition software. By just recording a few minutes of a song on this software, one can easily identify the artist, album, and song name completely online. The karaoke mode of the player ruins the vocals of the song that is currently playing and the effect varies also and is thus not so impressive. Another added feature is the Zappin functionality which lets users preview a song but sadly, it simply doesn’t work as desired. Media Go multimedia organizer is good though as it allows users to quickly share music files via drag and drop between their phone and PC. File conversion to best quality is almost hassle-free with this facility. Musical functionality is not just confined to a music player in case of Sony Ericsson Mix Walkman as the phone also has an in-built stereo FM radio with RDS. There is also room for social networking via SNS integration feature.
The on-board memory is merely 256 MB but it can be stretched to a maximum of 32 GB via microSD card.

Overall, Sony Ericsson Mix Walkman delivers a decent muisc experience if not spectacular. We were definitely impressed by its Touch UI, 3.0 inch TFT display and the Wi-Fi connectivity. Its affordability is a significant bonus that will come in handy. Most important is that it handles its primary music-oriented functionality fairly well. Sony Ericsson Mix Walkman is a portable music player and for those who need it, it is definitely a good choice also.

Overall Review

Sony Ericsson Walkman series, the “shake that” series from Sony is back with another decent handset with the forte nice music, Wi-Fi, images and movie mode. The touch screen device provides decent interface with a decent fit in the hand accompanied by a handy body. The device is a perfect blend of Style and Simplicity. Key features that surround Sony Ericsson Mix walkman are Quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE support, Touch-friendly four corner UI with Walkman player, Stereo speakers, 3.0" capacitive touchscreen of WQVGA resolution, 3.15 megapixel fixed-focus camera with QVGA video recording, Wi-Fi b/g,Stereo FM radio with RDS and TrackID, Standard microUSB port for charging and data, Stereo Bluetooth, microSD card slot, support for up to 32GB, 3.5mm-compatible audio jack, Accelerometer sensor for auto-rotate, Facebook and Twitter apps, Customizable color bands and Scratch-resistant surface. But no device is ideal and Mix Walkman has its own set of flaws in a pack namely No 3G, Low-res display, No on-screen QWERTY keyboard, No equalizers or repeat function for the music player, Disappointing camera, No file browser, No smart dial , No multi-tasking and microSD card slot under the battery.

User Interface and UI functionality

Sony Ericsson Mix Walkman provides a fairly decent User Device Interface, there are no widgets on the homescreen, however there are two different homescreen panels, one of which provides date and time, and the other can contains 5 of your closest contacts from the friends app. A further third screen can be taken into account when operating the music player.  The handy four-corner shortcuts from the Xperia mini make an appearance here as well. By default, they take you to the Walkman player, Message composer, Phonebook and dialer / call log. You can switch them with any four shortcuts of choice though At the top of the screen there is a thin strip with status info about battery, signal strength and active connections such as WLAN or Bluetooth. Sony Ericsson Mix Walkman has no space for multi tasking in the memory books added to the absence of file browser. The app launcher can be pulled up from the bottom of the screen and it features a 3x4 grid of icons arranged into horizontal pages. Newly installed apps go on these pages as well, and icons can be rearranged.

Multimedia features

Video Player is as primitive in functionality as it is in looks. A list appears which contains all the videos which are stored in the inbuilt Video folders put together aside the play/pause, skip controls, and a draggable progress bar. When we talk about playback support, QVGA and MP4 videos are supported. So the more common DivX/XXviD and AVI files are not supported by the device. The looks of Walkman Player give an immediate feel of the XPERIA family only replacing the XPERIA’s infinite signal is the Walkman Signal. There is no equalizer option in Sony Ericsson Mix Walkman and playlists are not supported either. The Mix Walkman arranges your music by artist or you can see the most played tracks, the new additions or all tracks. Shuffle option is present, one surprising feature here is that the Walkman player cannot repeat the track, something even primitive phones can do. Zappin is another of the new Walkman features. You turn it with the ZAP button at the top of the phone. Turning Zappin on will let you preview the tracks in your playlist by playing 4 or 15 seconds of the track’s chorus. Once you’ve found the one you want, pressing the ZAP key again will turn Zappin off and the current track will start the track from the beginning. Also operating in India, one of the most important specifications, the FM Radio is also present.

Pictures and Video quality

Enough of the soft part, now let us talk about the hardware of Sony Ericsson Mix Walkman which is headed by a 3 MP camera which provides an image resolution of 2048 x 1536 pixels. There is neither autofocus nor flash. There is no geotagging or advanced image settings. This is certainly one of the most basic camera interfaces on the market but we guess Sony Ericsson thought users wouldn’t need much more and would prefer simplicity to functionality. Video recording on the Mix Walkman goes as high as QVGA resolution, which, needless to say, is far from impressive. The frame rate is also low at 15 frames per second.

Internet support

Sony Ericsson Mix Walkman works on Obigo Q7 browser. The browser does not support flash input but looking at the conditions of processor and the low resolution display, even if the flash player was there,we wouldn’t have been able to use it to its full potential.

Internal and External Memory

In Sony Ericsson Mix walkman you are provided with 256 MB internal memory, not don’t get too happy till yet, only 100 MB of user space is available for user. On the side is the microSD slot which can carry external storage upto 32 GB.

Applications and Gaming

The immediate highlight of Sony Ericsson Mix Walkman is Friends App. The app can be compared to one of the likes of -enabled, tabbed phonebooks that we've seen on custom Android skins. It has five tabs - call log, list of text messages, a tab each for Twitter and Facebook updates and finally some contact management options. An access to Facebook, Twitter is directly provided in applications. Although what is missing is YouTube App.

Battery Backup

The device works on a Li-Ion 1000 mAh battery. The standby time provided is 465 hours that is a huge amount of time. Continuous talk time of 9 hours 40 mins is provided and upto 13 hours of music play continuous.

Connectivity Offered

Before proceeding to this section the one most important thing to be kept in mind that Sony Ericsson Mix Walkman is an entry level camera, so not much should be expected out of it. There are no GPS or 3G, but Wi-Fi b/g is quite a perk. Network data speed is limited to GPRS and EDGE. Local connectivity comes down to USB v2.0 and Bluetooth. There’s also a memory card slot, which can usually give you the fastest data transfer rates, but it’s under the battery, so no hot swap.

Compare

Sony Ericsson Mix Walkman does not qualify to compete with Windows based or Android based phones, the major competitors of this phone are Samsung Wave 525, Nokia Asha Series and  Samsung Galaxy Pop.

News Updates

June 2011 – Sony, the Multinational Electronic giant has signalled the arrival of Sony Walkman Mix. it's a chunky-but-light candybar phone with a curved, rubberised plastic back that sits fine in the palm but doesn't feel particularly solidly built. Style-wise, it apes the standard black appearance of its higher-spec stable mates, but comes with one of a range of plastic customisation bands that we can only imagine is intended to appeal to the young music-loving audience the phone's aimed at.
