Samsung Wave Y Review
Samsung has introduced a new BADA operating-system-based smartphone in the market and it’s called the Samsung Wave Y S5380. There is a 3.2 inch TFT LCD touchscreen on the Samsung Wave Y S5380 which runs the BADA version 2.0 over 832 MHz powerful processor. The Samsung Wave Y S5380 wins in the design aspect only because it is a very compact piece of device.
The 3.2” display sports 320 x 480 pixels resolution which is adequate for sporting decent viewing angles and sunlight visibility. The new BADA 2.0 TouchWiz UI brings additional features that have added oomph factor to it. There are transparent widgets and transitional animations and unit's 832MHz processor run them fairly well. All in all, the TouchWiz UI here introduces added visuals and functionality and we really like the scrolling action instead of swiping.
It also houses a 2.0 megapixels fixed focus camera with LED flash. The 2MP shooter of the Samsung Wave Y S5380 performs video capture at 640x480 resolution with 30fps. These videos are buttery smooth but lacks resolution to be comfortably viewed on a bigger screen. MPEG-4 videos played nicely but there is no DivX/Xvid support by default. The native music player can categorize music gallery by artists, albums and playlists. There is also a 5.1 channel button in its interface for faux-surround sound in headset mode.
The 3G enabled Samsung Wave Y S5380 boasts an internal memory of 150 MB and can easily expand it to up to 32 GB via a microSD card. The value added featuresin Samsung Wave Y S5380 are an optional NFC, Samsung apps, Chat ON IM application and Social Hub. For data connectivity, there is Bluetooth in v3.0, mini USB and WiFi 802.11 b/g/n in Samsung Wave Y S5380. The Dolphin browser of Samsung has been revamped along with its interface to support relentless web browsing on this device. The browser supports the latest version of Flash Lite and the displayed content is decent.
The Samsung Wave Y S5380 is quite a mediocre handset in terms of design and specs. The TouchWiz UI is just passable and the bada 2.0 has only been marginally improved. Consequently, the Samsung Wave Y S5380 is not the most notable Bada handset as it has some really lowly specs. The only tangible thing that seems upped is the NFC chip addition. NFC chips sports its own application, allowing you to receive and create NFC tags.
Overall Review
Samsung Wave Y is not the most desired low end device in the market and one of the most telling reasons for it is its operating system which is not Android like most of the Samsung devices. The device comes powered by the Bada operating system which is far behind the Android world in terms of apps with regards to not only to the number of games and apps but the quality of it as well. So far Samsung to entertain any thoughts of keeping the user interestted in the gadget, they had to offer something more and something attractive. The Y in the device stands for Youth and is aimed for the young users interested in having loads of features within affordable limits. The device does not disappoint in those regards and comes with a 3.2 inch screen that works at a average resolution of 320 by 480 pixels. The camera of 2 megapixels works fine and gives good quality output. Multimedia features are pretty sound as well with a music player and a video player where the music player really comes alive when used alongside a earphone. What the users would love about this device is the fact that it is NFC capable which is new technology and the market. The Wi-Fi working is also a positive feature with it working at a decent pace eve when used with other applications simultaneously. Wi-Fi is accompanied by the Wi-Fi Direct and Wi-Fi hotspot. The 1200 mAh battery is pretty good giving a decent amount of talk time and standby time. Available in the colors of Black, LaFleur edition, Samsung Wave Y seems a pretty good investment.
User Interface and UI functionality
Samsung Wave Y has a 3.2 inch screen which is a pretty decent size and offers a resolution of 320 by 480 pixels along with a pixel density of 180 ppi. The device can be interacted with through the touch screen facility and is backed by the TouchWiz UI technology.
Multimedia features
Samsung Wave Y has a music player that allows the user to listen to the songs he or she desires through the loudspeakers or through the earphones that can be attached to the device with the help of a 3.5 mm jack. The video player works pretty well too and is compatible with the formats MP3, AAC, AAC+, EAAC+, 3GA, M4A, WMA, FLAC and OGG while the music player supports 3GPP, H.263, H.264, MPEG4 and WMV. There is also the FM radio player that allows the user to access all the desired radio stations.
Pictures and Video quality
Samsung Wave Y has a 2 megapixel camera that lets the user click picturs at a resolution of 1600 by 1200 pixels and features loads of features like multiple shot modes including Single, Smile shot, Panorama, Night along with the various photo effects like No Effect, Grey, Sepia and Negative. Videos can also be shot but there is no access to a secondary camera.
Internet support
Samsung Wave Y comes with the Wi-Fi facility along with the Wi-Fi Direct, Wi-Fi hotspot that makes sure that the user can access the web and download data including music files, games, images and videos. The user can also visit the desired web sites like Facebook and Twitter. The user can also access mails for leisure and business purposes.
Internal and External Memory
Samsung Wave Y comes with an internal memory of 150 MB which is not much but the device comes with a 2 MB memory card which can further be enhanced up to 32 GB with the help of a microSD card slot that makes sure that the user can store loads of data without worrying about the memory space running out. The data that can be stored may include music files, games, images and videos.
Applications and Gaming
Samsung Wave Y has loads of games and apps that are pretty entertaining and engaging but as compared to the Android world of apps, its prowess falls short significantly. The Android devices would easily edge out the Bada in this regard.
Battery Backup
Samsung Wave Y comes powered by the standard lithium ion battery of 1200 mAh giving the user a talk time of up to 6 hours and 40 minutes along with a standby time of up to 570 hours. The user can then listen to songs for a longer duration and use other entertainment features without being interrupted.
Connectivity Offered
Samsung Wave Y comes with the NFC technology along with the Wi-Fi facility that gives the user access to wireless web at a quick pace. There is also the bluetooth facility that enables the user to connect with other devices and exchange data with it where the data exchanged may include music files, games, images and videos. There is also the USB port that can be used to charge the device or transfer and retrieve data to or from computers via USB cable. The GPRS feature makes sure that the user can navigate to the desired location with ease and comfort.
Compare
Samsung Wave Y when compared to Samsung Galaxy Y has a different operating system with the former featuring the Bada operating system and the latter Android. The Samsung Wave Y has a 3.2 inch screen which is bigger than the 3 inch screen offered by Samsung Galaxy Y. Also Samsung Wave Y has a better screen resolution and works at a pixel density higher than the Samsung Galaxy Y. The battery is similar in terms of strength with 1200 mAh but somehow the amount of talk time and standby time offered by Samsung Galaxy Y is significantly more than Samsung Wave Y. Camera again is of similar strength but Samsung Wave Y gives better results than Samsung Galaxy Y when the two are compared side by side. The look for the both the device is somewhat similar but most would agree with the statement that Samsung Wave Y is a notch higher in that regard.
News Updates
Samsung Wave Y is fired at all the youths of the country who are not that fussy about owning a Android device but would rather have a device with substantial amount of features with good quality. Samsung Wave Y gives just that with a 2 megapixel camera and a healthy Internet support. All in all a good device but with the absence of Android.
