Overall Review

Samsung Star 3G is a low-cost smartphone that is specially designed for those customers who are looking for lower end smartphones or for those who want to have the taste of a smartphone but without spending much for it. With a sleek look, this device has a stylish yet simple design along with a brilliant screen to delight the user with its usage. You can easily carry this device for a long time as it weighs only 96 grams and comes with a dimension of 102.8 mm x 54.8 mm x 12.9 mm and is marketed as a third generation device which encompasses the latest wireless technology for Internet connectivity. Among the recently introduced 3G-enabled mobile phones in India, Samsung 3G star is an interesting player. The Korean manufacturer is known for understanding the pulse of the market and user needs and with Samsung 3G Star it fills in both these expectations well. The display is sensitive in touch with virtual keypad and below the screen, it has three physical keys for making a call, joystick and for disconnecting the call or for closing the current page. The middle key has a chrome rim around it and is a four way navigation key that controls most of the functions of the device. Samsung Star 3G is available in black color and comes with dedicated zoom keys for the camera on the right side of the body, volume rocker keys on the left and a screen lock button on the top. The device does not hold any extraordinary looks as it is a low-end phone but very slim and lightweight, thus it is a very pocketable device. The face of the phone has glossy edges, which add to the looks, but it does not provide a very good grip to the fingers. At the top behind a dust cover is a multi-purpose port, which can be used for charging, headset connectivity as well as USB cable connection and at the back of the phone is the camera with an LED flash just beside it and the speaker of the phone is placed toward the bottom of the phone, where the back has a matte finish, which feels good and tried to provide a better grip.

User Interface and UI functionality

The screen of Samsung Star 3G is 2.8 inch in size and has TFT capacitive QVGA display that provides a resolution of 240 x 320 pixels with the help of 16M of color depth and Samsung's TouchWiz UI that helps in giving a better resolution and clarity to the device. This device is running on Samsung's own proprietary operating system and is pre-installed with WAP v.2.0 browser that allows the user to do surfing flawlessly and at a good speed. With a candy bar form factor, the touchscreen responds very well to the fingers and is blessed with Pen Stylus application that enables the user to write and draw directly on the screen it has a multiple desktop option with widgets to add more fun on the user's end. The new interface has used three home screens and there is a provision of throwing widgets from the widgets side bar onto the screen that comes really handy and you can have widgets dropped onto either sides or the center of the screen where the main screen background uses widescreen wallpaper which you can select from any part of an image stored in the phone memory and the phone will automatically adjust the aspect ratio and resolution according to the background of the main screen. The menu is simple and user friendly and quite easy to recognize which menu clubs with other sub-menus. The quick menu on the right of the screen allows the users to have quick access to the common menus.

Multimedia features

Being a smartphone, Samsung Star 3G is fully loaded with all the entertainment features which are an inseparable part of a multimedia handset. The user can play and record 64 polyphonic ringtones in various aural formats such as MP3, AAC, AAC+, e-AAC+, WMA, AMR and WAV to enable the user to listen any type of music supportable in these formats. Apart from this, Samsung Star 3G also provides support to various video formats such as MPEG4, H.263, H.264 and WMV that allows the user to enjoy a full video playback on a wide screen. There is the facility of FM radio in this phone along with RDS technology that permits the user to do recording from radio. One major loss that this smartphone suffers is the absence of 3.5 mm earphone jack, which is available even in the cheapest handsets but to balance the loss, Samsung Star 3G has installed DNSe sound engine that helps in making the sound quality better. Samsung’s Find Music feature is also available for music recognition via the voice recorder for external sources and the FM radio as well. The user can enjoy full on music 24 x 7 with the help of 3D surround sound technology and you can even create your own music library to have more fun and enjoyment.

Pictures and Video quality

Samsung Star 3G is blessed with a 3.2 MP camera that has LED flash to enable the user to have photos even when the light condition is low along with smile detection and digital zoom features. The user can shot images in various modes such as Continuous, Mosaic Shot, Frame shot, Panorama shot and Smile Shot along with numerous photo effects like black and white, sepia, negative and watercolor to name a few. White balance facility provides functions such as Auto, Daylight, Incandescent, Fluorescent and Cloudy to enable the user to have photography with fun and experience. There is a secondary camera also to allow the user to have live video chatting.

Internet support

Samsung Star 3G, as the name suggests, has 3G GSM wireless connectivity that allows the user to connect to the huge world of Internet at a very fast speed. This device provides Internet support through EDGE and GPRS via 2G and 3G network at HSPA+ speed and USB port, and to have attachment with the nearby devices, Star 3G has the facility of Bluetooth with A2DP.

Internal and External Memory

Samsung Star 3G comes with an internal memory of 50 MB which can hold contacts up to 2000 and 500 messages with 200 inbox, 200 sendbox, 50 drafts and 50 outbox messages. To save more data, the user can expand the external memory up to 8 GB with the help of microSD card slot.

Applications and Gaming

For the game lovers, Samsung Star 3G is loaded with games like Tumbling Dice, Party Bubble Popper, Crazy Penguine, Pyramidbloxx and Monopoly World. These games are entirely based on motion and touch detection. Though most of the games are only trial versions which can be downloaded from Samsung Application Store. All other mundane features are also available in this phone like a Converter, Calendar, Tasks app, Memo, Alarm clock, Stopwatch etc. to add more fun to the user experience. There is a mobile tracer application too in this device that will help you to locate your device in case it has been theft.

Battery Backup

The battery of Samsung Star 3G is not that much strong but it can keep the device alive up to a talktime of 8 hours and a standby time up to 365 hours. It has a standard Li-Ion 1,000 mAh battery that can support long hour of music and video playback seamlessly.

Connectivity Offered

Samsung Star 3G has nice connectivity features. Its Bluetooth pairing with other devices is exceptionally fast. The GPRS, HSDPA and EDGE features give the device an advantage over many other phones in the same range. It connects to the 2G GSM band at a frequency of 850/900/1800/1900 MHz and 3G at a bandwidth of 900/2100 MHz and provides HSDPA speed of 7.2 Mbps.

Samsung Star 3G is a nice entry level smartphone in Star series that has some good features to attract the customers but there are other low cost handsets available in the market that have more features than this device. To name some competitors that are doing well in the market are Samsung Galaxy Y, HTC Touch Viva or LG Cookie.
