Samsung Galaxy Pop Plus Review

Samsung Galaxy Pop Plus seems genuinely like a Samsung Galaxy Mini version. However, there are some slight up gradations given to this device, for instance, it has a better and more capable processing unit.  Samsung Galaxy Pop Plus features an upgraded 832MHz processor. Also, there is Android 2.2 Froyo on-board Samsung Galaxy Pop Plus and this can be upgraded to Gingerbread by those who are fond of it. The touch display of Samsung Galaxy Pop Plus is sized at 3.14 inches and is of capacitive type that demands applause as the phone falls in the mid-range segment.  Pop Plus has a camera similar to the original predecessor device and as such it boasts a 3 megapixels camera. It is capable of video shooting in QVGA resolution at 15 frames per second. As far as the stills clicked by this camera are concerned, it is possible to geo-tag them and these are taken at a decent resolution of 2048 x 1536 pixels. There is MP3 music player in Samsung Galaxy Pop Plus and it also has a FM radio on board.

Next up is the memory of Samsung Galaxy Pop Plus that stands at 164 MB as far as the internal memory is concerned. A 2 GB memory card is already included with the package and memory of the phone can be taken further via a microSD card of capacity up to 32GB. There is both 2 G and 3 G network support on Samsung Galaxy Pop Plus and as such users can experience blazing speeds while Internet surfing, data downloading and live streaming. The battery of the phone is also quite supportive and does not deplete quickly. There is a HTML browser in the Samsung Galaxy Pop Plus for facilitating the web browsing experience over either GPRS/EDGE or HSDPA. This is also due to the improvised processor of this phone. For local data sharing, there is Bluetooth v 2.1 in Samsung Galaxy Pop Plus and wireless connectivity is taken care of by the Wi Fi connection one gets on this Android device.

Other standard smartphone features as SNS integration, A GPS support, Google Maps, Google search, document editor/viewer, image viewer/editor and instant messengers like GTalk are all there in Samsung Galaxy Pop Plus. Slightly expensive than the original Samsung Galaxy Mini, Samsung Galaxy Pop Plus which is its mini version, is still, a decent budget Android smartphone good enough for all the keen buyers. We particularly like the phone for its nice display size, 3 MP camera and 3G support.

Overall Review

Samsung Galaxy Pop Plus is a mid-range Android smartphone that runs the Android Froyo and derives power from 832 MHz processor. It has 3.14" wide capacitive touch display and boasts of a 3.15 megapixels camera, nice multimedia features, and 3G support as well. The physical dimensions (length, width, and thickness) of the phone are 110.4mm x 60.6mm x 12.1mm and it weighs about 106.6 grams.

The memory of the phone is expandable to 32GB via microSD card. It has an average battery back up too. All in all, it is conventional Android device that is not taxing on one’s pocket and brings along a whole new Android experience too.

User Interface and UI functionality

Samsung Galaxy Pop Plus is an Android phone that runs the Android OS version 2.2 (Froyo) that can even be upgraded to v2.3. Claimed as a successor to Samsung Galaxy Mini, the Samsung Galaxy Pop Plus boasts of a better processor than that phone which is clocked at 832 MHz and is of ARMv6 with Qualcomm MSM 7227 chipset.

The improvement also shows clearly in the display of this device and as such it has a 3.14 inches TFT capacitive touch-screen with 256K colors with 240×320 pixels of resolution. The standard user interface is given to this device and as such we find the TouchWiz v3.0 UI touch interface in this device. There are two sensors in the phone, that are an accelerometer sensor and a proximity sensor.

The Samsung Galaxy Pop Plus touch-screen phone powered by Samsung’s TouchWIZ v 3.0 is bound to have a “Widgets feature” just like all the devices equipped with this technology. Users can choose from a whole range of widget-style mini applications that open on its home screen, out of which several widgets are built-in. Users can activate each of them by swiping a finger. This clearly displays information hidden inside the phone and one can then access images, music, and all the other content.

Widgets with drag-and-drop feature provide a quick way to access various functions in the handset. The simple technology allows selecting multiple widgets (a small chunk of code that is easily portable) from the left panel of the screen and can be dropped anywhere on the main screen.

Multimedia features

Samsung Galaxy Pop Plus has an integrated media player supporting MP3/AMR/ AAC/AAC+/e-AAC+ files and video player with support for popular video file formats viz. MP4/WMV/H.264/H.263 files. It has support for MP3 ringtones, vibration alerts, and WAV ringtones. The phone also boasts of a 3.5 mm audio jack with DNSe (Digital Natural Sound Engine) sound enhancement.

There is a stereo FM radio with RDS and 20 presets station memory in Samsung Galaxy Pop Plus. The handset, though, lacks support for HDMI and TV out ports.

Pictures and Video quality

Samsung Galaxy Pop Plus has a 3.15 mega pixels camera with 2048×1536 pixels of resolutions. The geo-tagging feature is enabled and though there is no secondary camera in the phone but users can record videos with its primary camera as QVGA at 15fps.

The camera quality is acceptable and results are decent.

Internet support

Samsung Galaxy Pop Plus works with 2G GSM network and 3G HSDPA network on the quad band frequency of GSM 850/900/1800/1900 MHz and HSDPA 900/2100 MHz respectively. The embedded HTML browser helps users to surf the internet and that happens via Class 12 GPRS (32-48 kbps) and EDGE (7.2 mbps HSDPA speed).

Since the Samsung Galaxy Pop Plus smartphone is armed with HTML5 and HSDPA 7.2, users are able to view the content on Internet quite quickly and also download files faster than ever.

Internal and External Memory

Samsung Galaxy Pop Plus has 160MB of internal memory coupled with 384MB RAM. There is 32GB expandable memory and 2GB memory card comes free with the phone at the time of purchase. This allows practically unlimited entries phonebook and call records on this handset.

Applications and Gaming

The standard apps find place on the specs list of Samsung Galaxy Pop Plus. The smartphone also includes popular Android-based apps including Google search, Google Gmail, YouTube, Calendar, and Google talk. There is in-built support for MS document editors including Word, Excel, and Power Point in addition to PDF.

Apart from the Internet apps viz. Google Search, Picasa integration, Gmail, Maps, YouTube, Calendar, Google Talk, some useful ones for a wholesome performance have also been integrated like the organizer, document viewer, image and video editor, audio (MP3/WAV/eAAC+ player) and video (MP4/H.264/H.263 player) player.

There is Java MIDP emulator too in this phone that lets users add apps and play games. Overall, there are more than 50,000 applications to choose from Android Market and users have access to Google mobile services too.

Battery Backup

The battery of Samsung Galaxy Pop Plus is a Li-Ion 1200 mAh capacity battery that gives stand-by back up of 570 hrs (2G), up to 440 hrs (3G), and talk time of 9 hrs (2G) and up to 6 hrs (3G).

Connectivity Offered

There are connectivity features viz. 802.11 b/g/n WLAN with Wi-Fi hotspot, v2.1 Bluetooth with A2DP and USB facilitated on Samsung Galaxy Pop Plus. There is also A-GPS support on Samsung Galaxy Pop Plus .

Compare

Samsung has designed Samsung Galaxy Pop Plus on similar pattern as its predecessor Samsung Galaxy Mini and have done that quite nicely too. This affordable handset has all the characterstics of a good Android smartphone. The display, camera and 3G connectivity of Samsung Galaxy Pop Plus is totally admirable. But we miss the secondary camera in this device and some novelty too.

Though priced on the upper side, the Nokia C7 smartphone offers something better than Samsung Galaxy Pop Plus for sure. First is its touch display, which is tad larger (measures 3.5”) but is of very high quality as it works on the AMOLED technology. Nokia C7 boasts 8 GB of internal memory which is far too more than its Samsung counterpart. Next comes its 8 megapixels primary camera which clicks awesome pictures, thanks to its auto-focus capabilities and integrated LED flash. The phone also has a secondary VGA camera for video calls and thus the full potential of 3G connectivity is realized.

This Symbian device runs the Symbian OS version 3 that is quite advanced and reliable.  The 600 MHz processor and almost a similar battery life harms Nokia C7's position as against Samsung Galaxy Pop Plus. Also, the craze for Android is on a high and that gives Galaxy Pop Plus a definite advantage but Nokia C7 is also a good Symbian phone.
