Samsung Galaxy Beam Review
Overall Review
For quite some time now we have witnessed the launch of projector phones. However, almost all of them were feature phones based on Java operating system. For the first time ever, things have flipped and Samsung’s projector phone, Samsung Galaxy Beam has come up. This is a smartphone with a built-in projector. The 15 lumens projector in Galaxy Beam is bright enough to make a screen 50 inched big just about readable in a flourescent room from four feet away. It’s better used in a very dark room. The troubles encountered while focusing can be done away via the volume rocker. The projector itself has a resolution of 640x360 but its brightness is just 15 lumens as already stated.
This recently-launched smartphone thereby allows users to share digital or media files, with anyone or everyone. Otherwise, Samsung Galaxy Beam appears to look like just another Android phone. It has a reasonably large 4", TFT capacitive touchscreen display with a standard resolution of 480x800, and a 1GHz dual-core processor. It runs on Android 2.3.6 Gingerbread OS and is powered by a NovaThor U8500 chipset.
User Interface and UI functionality
Samsung Galaxy Beam isn’t a quad-core smartphone running Ice Cream Sandwich and isn’t HD also. Samsung’s projector phone runs Android 2.3.6 (Gingerbread) fluently on its 1GHz dual-core processor and unless one doesn’t bother for that, it has got a projector. Samsung hasn't confirmed whether it will update the phone to the latest 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich version of Android but considering this is a niche device, it is also possible that it doesn’t do that. Samsung Galaxy Beam has a dedicated projector UI and a button to activate or shut off the feature, instantly displaying current screen or PowerPoint, picture or movie files via the Projector app. It’s pleasing for the gadget lovers watching a smartphone projector. The phone is plump and despite featuring a full built-in projector, measuring just 12.5 mm thick and features an ergonomic design. It’s solid though and its textured back is also home to a neatly placed 5 megapixels camera.
Multimedia features
Samsung Galaxy Beam comes with a "projector-dedicated application" that will enable projection of specific content like photos, videos, games, maps and "business information". These have been identified by Samsung as the multimedia content that can be beamed from the phone. There is also a music player in the phone that supports the following formats: MP3, WAV, eAAC+, AC3, FLAC for entertainment purpose. The Galaxy Beam also has dual cameras. One is the rear-facing 5 megapixels primary camera and the other is a front-facing 1.3MP camera.
Pictures and Video quality
Once you get past the projector feature, specifications in Samsung Galaxy Beam are not that impressive. It includes just an 5-megapixels rear camera and a front-facing 1.3-megapixels camera. The camera delivers 2592 x 1944 pixels resolution and has special features such as geo-tagging, touch focus, face and smile detection as well.
Internet support
One can access Internet on Samsung Galaxy Beam via GPRS/EDGE class 12 connections of 2G GSM network or on HSDPA 7.2 mbps and HSUPA 5.76 mbps connection on 3G network. Wi-Fi connectivity is also provided, along with DLNA and Wi-Fi Hotspot features.
Internal and External Memory
The 768 MB of RAM and 8 GB of internal memory storage of Samsung Galaxy Beam are serviceable, but don't compete with most flagship phones of 2012. However, it hosts a microSD card slot for extra storage of capacity up to 32 GB.
Applications and Gaming
Samsung Galaxy Beam is an Android smartphone. Besides all the standard apps and games that one can download from the Google Play Store, there is also a specialized app since it’s a projector phone. It is called as "projector-dedicated application". This app really helps its projector function by selectively displaying the content and barring the rest.
Battery Backup
Samsung Galaxy Beam is definitely not a Galaxy S II atleast performance-wise but its projector sets it apart from the rest. The extreme battery consumption of this phone is well taken care of by a 2000 mAh Li-Ion battery which is sufficient enough to allow a quick projection and still lasts you throughout the day. The 2000 mAh battery powering the Galaxy Beam will enable up to 3 hours of projection time. It gives 20 hours of talk time on 2G and 9.6 hours on 3G.
Connectivity Offered
For connectivity locally, there is WLAN Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, DLNA, Bluetooth v3.0 with A2DP and microUSB v2.0. Plus, there is social networking integration with live updates, Google Search, Maps, Gmail, YouTube, Google Talk integration, image editor, organizer, ThinkFree Office Mobile document editor, voice memo/dial and predictive text input (Swype).
Compare
The smartphone, called the Samsung Galaxy Beam is definitely innovative and comes in indirect competition with one of the Nokia devices.Nokia 808 PureView doesn’t boast of a projector but has a splendid 41 mega pixels camera. It is one’s own choice to spend big bucks on a smartphone with a projector or a camera with massive pixel count. The 41 megapixels autofocus rear camera with “Carl Zeiss” optics and Xenon flash means something really big, if one goes with Nokia 808 PureView. It can record full HD videos (1080p) at 30 fps and there also is a front facing VGA camera for video calling with ability to record VGA quality videos. There are other features in Nokia 808 PureView to allure buyers. In fact, the Beam is quite a standard Android handset otherwise. On the contrary, Nokia 808 PureView comes with an array of impressive features.
There is Bluetooth v3.0, Wi-Fi and 3G and microUSB 2.0 port and additionally, there is Near Field Communication (NFC) and A-GPS support in this device. Nokia 808 PureView manages very well with a 4-inch AMOLED capacitive touchscreen, Nokia Belle operating system, a 1.3 GHz ARM 11 processor, 512 MB RAM and internal memory of 16 GB. On the other side, Galaxy Beam is unique because a projector is unheard in a smartphone as yet. The specifications of Galaxy Beam’s projector isn’t that great but this one’s built into a smartphone, it lasts 20,000 hours and using it every day for next couple of years is just fine. Besides, Galaxy Beam also is getting rave reviews for its slimness. It also has a 4.0 inch screen, 1GHz dual core processor, 8GB expandable storage, 5 megapixels camera and a far-fetched 2000 mAh battery.
News Updates
The Samsung Galaxy Beam was announced in February 2012 and was subsequently launched in July 2012. Its most notable feature is its cool projector, since very few smartphones come with the capability of projecting content. In fact, the Galaxy Beam is expected to get an update to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich in the near future.
