Nokia Lumia 520 Review
The windows season is back with the ever so magnanimous platform from Microsoft. Nokia, a company that was at the top of the table a decade ago is now finding itself as the underdog. The company’s refusal to use Android as a platform for its smartphones has put them is a sticky situation. Nokia Lumia 520 is a cheaper version of the other windows handsets from Nokia with the latter being a little too out of reach for the consumers. The device, just like all the other windows handsets, looks stunning with minimum wastage of space. The device has a 4-inch IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen that gives a resolution of 480 by 800 pixels along with a support of 16 million colors. The 233ppi pixel density is not bad at all, which gives nice saturated colors. The swiping is easy and smooth and the scratch resistant glass also prevents the screen from getting damaged. The device weighs 124 grams while the dimensions are 119.9mm by 64mm by 9.9mm. The dual-core processor clocked at a speed of 1GHz is coupled with 512MB RAM and the combination is pretty solid to carry on the functions of the droid without facing any lag. Another 512MB would be a blessing for a device of such stature. Internal memory is 8GB, which is huge and if the user disagrees than he or she can enhance the external storage capacity up to a mammoth 64GB with the help of a microSD card slot. GPRS, Wi-Fi and a built-in HTML5 browser let the user visit different websites including Facebook and Twitter. Downloading data can also be done with relative ease. Nokia Lumia 520 runs on the Microsoft Windows Phone 8 operating system, which provides access to latest apps and games. The 5 megapixels camera is really well built producing wonderful images at a resolution of 2592 by 1936 pixels.
The user also gets the autofocus and geo-tagging facilities, where the former makes sure that the user can click pictures with accuracy and the latter provides the geographical information of the place where an image has been clicked. The user can click pictures at one-fourth of sensor size while videos can be shot at 720 pixels. There is a 7GB skydrive storage facility, which is like a virtual disk for the user to keep a huge amount of data. Available in the colors of yellow, red, cyan and white black, Nokia Lumia 520 is powered by the standard lithium-ion battery of 1,430mAh that provides a talk time of up to 14 hours and 20 minutes in 2G along with a standby time of up to 360 hours. The standby time in 3G is the same as that of 2G but talk time decreases to 9 hours and 40 minutes.
Overall Review
While the whole world drifts towards the Android platform, there is one company that choses to go otherwise. Nokia for long used to rule the roost but was overtaken by Samsung as the top selling cellphone. The Finnish company has struggled to repeat its performance ever since Android came into the market. Their refusal to adopt Android has baffled a lot of people but one has to understand that Nokia already has a smartphone platform with Symbian so it would not make sense for them to go in that direction. There is an alternate option in the market with Windows, which although has not picked up the pace like Android did but does offer something different to the user. Nokia has been an avid user of Windows for a while now and they are trying to introduce a more economical version of the Lumia series with Nokia Lumia 520. The 3G compatible device has a nice big 4-inch display that is backed by the IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen. The pixel density is 233ppi with a scratch resistant glass to protect it from unintended damages. The device has a beautiful look with sharp rectangular edges that gives more display space. With a length of 119.9mm, breadth 64mm and height 9.9mm, Nokia Lumia 520 has a microSD card slot that can elongate the external memory of the device up to a massive 64GB.
The microSD card should not come in use though an already adequate 8GB of internal memory is there to ensures a vast data reservoir. The RAM is embarrassingly low with 512MB as more is expected from a Windows handset. The processor is 1GHz dual-core which should make up for some lack of speed with the abysmal RAM. The device runs on the Microsoft Windows Phone 8 operating system that provides access to a lot of games and apps. As far as the Internet is concerned, Nokia Lumia 520 has the Wi-Fi with dual-band and an HTML5 browser but there is Wi-Fi hot-spot or DLNA, which is another setback for the consumers. The 5 megapixels camera is awesome though with fantastic results both outdoors and indoors. Video recordings are also praise worthy but there is no secondary camera which by now makes one wonder why Nokia decided to cut down on so many key features even when the price is a little low for a windows phone. Nokia devices have always been admired for their battery capabilities and the company does not disappoint here too with a 1,430mAh standard lithium-ion battery providing a perfectly acceptable talk time of up to 14 hours and 4 minutes in 2G along with a standby time of up to 360 hours.
The standby time is same for 3G but the talk time decreases to 9 hours and 40 minutes. In addition the user also gets a music playback time of up to 61 hours. The device is available in the colors of yellow, red, cyan and the combination of white and black. There is a 7GB free skydrive storage facility for keeping data on a virtual disk. Multimedia features are same as always with a music player, a video player and an FM radio.
User Interface and UI functionality
Nokia Lumia 520 has a 4-inch IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen that is backed by 16 million colors along with a resolution of 480 by 800 pixels and a pixel density of 233ppi. The screen is protected by the scratch resistant technology. The response time is pretty quick while fingers run pretty smoothly through the device.
Multimedia features
Nokia Lumia 520 has a music player that produces a very good sound quality through the earphones with a nice balance between bass and treble. The video player plays well conditioned videos that are compatible with the formats MP4, H.264, H.263 and WMV player. The music player lets the user hear songs through the earphones that can be attached to the device with the help of a 3.5mm jack or through the loudspeakers in the formats MP4, H.264, H.263 and WMV player. The sound quality is better with earphones as almost all the outside noise is blocked with the active noise cancellation backed by a dedicated mic.
Pictures and Video quality
Nokia Lumia 520 has a 5 megapixels primary camera located at the back of the device that produces superior images at a resolution of 2592 by 1936 pixels. The user can click images at a sensor size of one fourth of an inch. The autofocus and geo-tagging are additional features that make one image clicking experience better. Videos can be shot at 720 pixels, which do not disappoint the user in terms of quality.
Internet support
Nokia Lumia 520 has the Wi-Fi and dual-band facility that can be used for accessing the web. There is also the HTML5 browser for watching videos on YouTube, surfing Google or staying connected with friends and family on Facebook.
Internal and External Memory
Nokia Lumia 520 has an internal memory of 8GB, which is big on its own and can accommodate a gigantic amount of data like songs, games, images and videos. But the microSD card slot takes the word gigantic to a whole another level with a potential of increasing the external memory up to 64GB, which is 8 times of what the internal memory has to offer. The RAM does not reciprocate the same level of quality as the memory is only 512MB.
Applications and Gaming
Nokia Lumia 520 has lots of games and apps with windows 8 operating system but there is a lot to catch-up on for the windows platform as far as its comparison with Android is concerned. Still Windows operating system needs a huge quantity of applications and games based on latest technology and software.
Battery Backup
Nokia Lumia 520 is backed by the standard lithium-ion battery of 1,430mAh that supplies a talk time of up to 14 hours and 40 minutes in 2G and up to 9 hours and 40 minutes in 3G. The standby time is same for both 2G and 3G with up to 30 hours. Music play time is solid too with up to 61 hours which is huge.
Connectivity Offered
Nokia Lumia 520 has the Bluetooth, USB port, Wi-Fi, dual-band and GPRS as far as the data connectivity features are concerned. With so many options you can easily stay connected with your friends and family members anytime and from anywhere round the globe.
