Overall Review
Micromax Q5 is a dual SIM treat by one of India's domestic cell phone device manufacturers- Micromax, and sports a full QWERTY keyboard. Besides giving you the full access to many of the social networking sites, this handset also offers business and productivity tools. Social networking features, such as Facebook, enhanced Opera Mini browser and IM client, are pre-loaded in this phone. The phone also offers various connectivity options like WAP, GPRS and Bluetooth. The music player in this device is powered by Yamaha that gives an amazing sound quality to this phone. The music as well the video players support multiple aural and video formats, so that you do not have to compromise in terms of quality. You can expand the external memory of the device up to 8GB using a microSD card in the memory card slot. Whatever you received on your device or whatever you download from the Internet, this handset provides you the option of saving the desired file into the memory card so that you never end up eating a huge part of your phone memory. Micromax Q5 comes packed in a size of 115mm x 62mm x 12.5mm and holds a weight of 95 grams only, giving credit to the plastic chassis of the device. The only metal part in the outer body is the thick chrome bezel around the sides of Micromax Q5, which gives it a sturdy look. Micromax Q5 comes with an ezpad that includes a trackball with six other functional keys. The QWERTY keypad holds very aptly spaced keys, thus reduces the chances of any accidental press. The right as well as the left side of this dual SIM handset holds no shortcut key or connectivity slot. The bottom has the mouthpiece only whereas the USB port is placed on the upper face of the device. The back of the handset has an average 2 megapixels camera with Yamaha and Micromax logo. The trackball shows alarming speed while working but the major drawback with this ball is that it is very dust prone. Slowly and gradually it will grab the dust particles from your fingers and this leads to the jamming of the trackball. It is suggested to use the trackball after wearing some plastic gloves in your hands to keep it dust free. The another drawback in this phone is the quality of the headphone, which is very poor and gives below average sound output.
User Interface and UI functionality
Micromax Q5 comes with a 2.2 inches wide TFT display that is not touch sensitive. This display provides a screen resolution of 320 x 240 pixels with a color combination made from 256 thousand colors. The pixel density of 182 ppi makes the screen looks crystal clear and sharp with vibrant output. The trackball is very responsive and almost most of the work is being done by this ball only so you can do multitasking using a single trackball only. The user interface of Micromax Q5 is very friendly and will make your dealing with it memorable.
Multimedia features
Micromax Q5 provides you a nice interaction with the multimedia features. The music player is decent that supports MP3, AAC, AAC+, WAV and AMR formats to deliver you a good sound output. The headphone shows some problem after a short time of usage and will start giving low sound quality. But overall, with only a small investment amount, you will be satisfied with its service. There is a support for the video player also that gives back up to MP4 and H.263 formats for video playback and for video recording. The FM radio is also there to turn your feet on. The headphone acts like an antenna for the FM radio so you have to attach your earphone with the phone before tuning to any radio station.
Pictures and Video quality
Micromax Q5 has 2 megapixels average camera sensor that captures images with a resolution of 1600 x 1200 pixels with the usual basic features. The camera has all the basic functionalities that are there in the other average cameras. This camera sensor can also record videos of VGA quality.
Internet support
Micromax Q5 provides support to Internet connectivity via options like multi slot GPRS of class 10 with 4+1/3+2 slots, which provides a maximum connectivity speed of 32 – 48 kbps and EDGE of class 10 with maximum speed of 236.8 kbps. There is no support for 3G and Wi-Fi network. You can sync your data, stored in Micromax Q5, with other compatible devices via Bluetooth with A2DP and USB port. The WAP browser gives a quality service without showing any sluggishness. The Opera Mini browser also works amazingly well.
Internal and External Memory
Micromax Q5 comes with an internal storage space of 15MB, which is sufficient to store your 1000 contacts, call records and messages. You can even store your messages in the external memory. The external memory of this handset is extensible up to 8GB using a microSD card in the memory card slot. You can store a huge amount of data in this memory card.
Applications and Gaming
Micromax Q5 has all the basic applications and features that are necessarily needed in every multimedia handset. There are many built-in applications along with some social networking sites that will allow you to stay connected with your social circle. The built-in games are also capable of keeping you busy while on the go. Melody Composer, Incoming Call Guard, World Clock (Format12 / 24), Multiple Alarms, Calculator, Currency and Unit Convertor, Calendar, To-do List, Auto Power On and Off, E-book Reader, Voice Input, etc. are some of the additional features in this phone by Micromax.
Battery Backup
Micromax Q5 holds a powerful standard Li-Ion 1,000 mAh battery that delivers to you a talk time of up to 5 hours. The standby time is up to 180 hours and you can also do hours of web surfing, listen to your favorite track either on radio or on music player, watch your preferred videos or play games for a long time without eating up the whole battery.
Connectivity Offered
Micromax Q5 offers connectivity to GSM networks only for both the SIM cards at a bandwidth of 900 / 1800 MHz for SIM 1 and 900 / 1800 MHz for SIM 2. Due to the metal rim all around the sides of the phone, the signal reception is a little bit weak and will loose its connectivity sometimes. Apart from this minute defect, this handset is a good choice at an affordable price range.
