Micromax Canvas HD A116 Review

Micromax has pulled another rabbit out-of-the-hat with Micromax Canvas HD A116, which is a 5 inch IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen phablet that runs on the Android Jelly Bean operating system, upgradable to Android v.4.2, a feature that has been lacking from the previous Micromax devices. This Indian manufacturing company's Phablet would be going head to head against Samsung Galaxy Grand, which also features a 5 inch screen along with the 1.2GHz processor that Micromax Canvas HD A116 also is backed by. The 5 inch screen gives a resolution of 720 by 1280 pixels which is more than what Samsung Galaxy Grand offers and the pixel density is also pretty decent with 294ppi. The 4GB internal memory is pretty spacious but in case that is not enough the user has the luxury to expand the external memory up to 32GB with the help of a microSD card slot. The 1GB RAM backed by the quad-core 1.2GHz Cortex-A7 processor allows the user to access the resources of the system at a fast pace. The 8 megapixels camera is pretty powerful too, with a resolution of 3264 by 2448 pixels and features the autofocus facility along with LED flash, Geo-tagging, touch focus and face detection. Videos can be shot with this rear camera, whereas the secondary camera allows the user to web chat and video call. The secondary camera is of VGA quality, a department where Samsung Galaxy Grand has an edge with a 2 megapixels secondary camera. Multimedia features are plenty with a music player and a video player, which gives the user the latest that the entertainment world has to offer. The music player is compatible with the formats - MP3, AAC, WMA and WAV player, whereas the video player supports MP4, WMV, H.264 and H.263 player formats. There is also a radio FM player that allows the user to listen to all the popular radio stations that are available in their respective cities. Various data connectivity features offered by the device includes the Wi-Fi feature that gives the user access to web, which is further backed by the Wi-Fi hot spot technology along with a USB port, Bluetooth, GPRS and EDGE technology. The device is available in the colors of black and white and runs on the standard lithium ion battery of 2,000 mAh that would give the user a decent amount of talk time and standby time making sure the device can be operated upon without any interruption.

Overall Review

Micromax is leaving no stone unturned in order to keep their aggressive strategy in check. The company has done well so far with their previous Phablet venture giving consumers a taste of high profile features like Samsung Galaxy Note series but for a lower price. Micromax Canvas HD A116 has a 5 inch IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen, which officially puts it in the Phablet category. The screen gives a healthy pixel density of 294ppi, which is equivalent to what the Samsung Galaxy Note has to offer. The device comes with a Dual SIM facility with, which it really gets an edge over its competitors in the same department. Its Quad-core 1.2GHz Cortex-A7 processor along with 1GB RAM makes the device speedy and smooth while the Android Jelly Bean operating system puts the icing on the cake.

 

The 8 megapixels camera is pretty much on the same lines in terms of performance as compared to A110 and does not have a BSI sensor. The camera could have been a little better in terms of performance but in case it still works well and produces decent results. A secondary VGA camera for video calling is also facilitated. An internal memory of 4GB is provided, which can be expanded up to 32GB with the help of a microSD card slot. The device is available in color of black and white and comes powered by the standard lithium ion battery of 2,000 mAh, which may fall short of user's expectations in terms of delivering sustained performance as the device comes with a quad core processor which will consume a comparatively larger amount of power. The Internet facility is pretty decent too with Wi-Fi good enough for daily use although it is not a dual band Wi-Fi.
