LG Optimus Net Review
Overall Review
LG Optimus Net is a mid-range Android handset with decent features. In fact, the device has all the requisite features to complement the affordable price tag of Rs. 10K. There’s a 3.2 inch capacitive touch display, 800 MHz processor, and Android Gingerbread operating software. All the standard media features are incorporated including a good audio video player and 3.15 megapixels camera. The poor battery backup of the phone is definitely a drawback. On the other fronts, Optimus Net scores well and it boasts ample external memory support, good build, and smooth and responsive user interface functionality. There are good numbers of productive apps loaded on the device for user’s sake and we totally like the connectivity features of the Optimus Net too. There’s Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and A-GPS support.
User Interface and UI functionality
The LG Optimus Net has a physical build that seems a little cheap because of the plastic body. It has derived the overall look from the original Optimus P500 mobile phone and sports a similar 320x480 pixels resolution rendering 3.2-inch capacitive touchscreen. The sides and the back portion of the device are very glossy and attract fingerprints and gets scratches too. The phone is lightweight at 122 grams. There are volume rocker buttons on the left, microUSB slot on the right and the top has a tiny power button along with 3.5mm a/v jack. There are physical buttons beneath the display that includes options key on the left and the home, return and search key buttons in the sequence. The keypad quality is not up to the mark and probably that is the reason why menu button feels hollower and doesn’t have a very consistent feel.
The user interface of the LG Optimus Net runs on an 800 MHz processor coupled with an Adreno 200 GPU. It is speedier and smooth also. Consequently, navigation through the menu and home screen is lag-free. The homescreen interface brings up a pop-up window to load widgets and shortcuts on long pressing. There’s also a new Social+ integration widget in the phone that gives latest news feeds from users social networking accounts. Music playback could be controlled even with unlocked screen. The online virtual QWERTY keypad on 3.2-inch screen, especially in the portrait mode, works quite nicely and makes typing faster.
However, the UI functionality lacks finesse. For instance, the drop down notification bar is not very good. Similarly, the icons feel separated from the menu as if distinct sections have been stitched together. All in all, the interface doesn’t look as appealing as expected.
Multimedia features
LG Optimus Net has the potential to give a pretty basic multimedia experience only because the device does not have any equalizers or sound enhancements. The music player simply has options like Shuffle, Repeat, and Party Shuffle. Only standard audio and video formats are supported. Music based apps need to be downloaded for enhancing the standards of media experience over LG Optimus Net. The audio quality via the loudspeaker is pretty loud and clear. Video playback supports DivX/Xvid codecs out of the box, so that’s quite good, but viewing videos on a screen with a 180 ppi density isn’t going to produce the best results. There’s also 3.15 MP camera with a resolution of 2048 x 1536 pixels in LG Optimus Net.
Pictures and Video quality
The 3.15 megapixels camera of LG Optimus Net is nothing more than the standard in delivering results. It is decent but extraordinary. It has an autofocus but the feature does nothing to improve the picture quality. Moreover, there’s no LED flash for clicking good pictures in low light or poor light conditions. The colors do not remain natural and look faded or absolutely washed out.
All in all, the camera interface, options and customizations are pretty standard. There are only basic scenes, brightness and zoom options. Also, the video shooting is just possible in VGA mode with a resolution of 640 x 480 pixels. The speed also goes only up to 24fps.
Internet support
LG Optimus Net is a quad-band phone with 3G HSDPA speeds going up to 3.6Mbps. It supports hassle free Web browsing via the built-in browser that is pretty quick and due to the speedier processor, it also multitasks. On the downside, the phone’s CPU doesn’t support flash.
Internal and External Memory
The rear flap of LG Optimus Net is easy to remove and storage place for the SIM card. It implies that the memory card of the phone is hot swappable. It is clocked at maximum capacity of 32 GB. There’s also 512 MB RAM support.
Applications and Gaming
There’s 150 MB of internal memory in the LG Optimus Net for accommodating applications and games. The device has an array of supported apps. Polaris Viewer, for instance, is a preinstalled app on LG Optimus Net that allow users to view their presentations and documents. The remote call app keeps all LG mobile phone users remotely access and find their device. There’s also Smartshare for data sharing via DLNA.
Battery Backup
The LG Optimus Net comes with a 1500mAh battery that through the customary call, video, audio, and streaming lasted for 1.5 hours of calling, 4 hours of video and 3 hours 20 minutes of audio. Less taxing 3.2-inch screen also helps the phone achieve pretty good battery life.
Connectivity Offered
The connectivity options on LG Optimus Net include Bluetooth 3.0 with A2DP and Wi-Fi with hotspot. The phone also supports DLNA for wirelessly streaming of media content to other devices in the same Wi-Fi network. GPS with A-GPS support and Google Maps are the available navigation options.
Compare
The LG Optimus Net is priced at Rs. 10,999 approximately and within this price range, one can also opt for HTC Explorer. HTC's new budget Android phone, the Explorer has 3.15 megapixels camera, 1230 mAh battery, 512 MB RAM and 600MHz processor. The only advantage the LG Optimus Net has is a relatively better battery life and autofocus 3.15 megapixels camera. In user experience, the UI functionality, build and the enhancements, HTC Explorer trumps the Net hands down. The good built and charming looks are of definite advantage of Optimus Net and it has all the essential features too. It is suggested to prospective buyers that if a good user interface and some extra features are their priority over performance, then the affordable Android device HTC Explorer is a good bet for them. Else, they know that Optimus Net has it all.
