Overall Review
LG Optimus 3D Max follows on from the original LG Optimus 3D smartphone that got rave reviews for its ability to deliver flawless 3D experience. The successor also retains this ability and can shoot 3D photos and videos. One won’t need 3D glasses to see the 3D results on this phone. On the downside, LG Optimus 3D Max still sticks to similar version of the Android operating system, the Gingerbread. LG has compensated this negative aspect by incorporating a faster processor unit and some more memory in LG Optimus 3D Max. The device enjoys high speed, thanks to its faster dual-core processors rated at 1.2 GHz. Some new features have also been incorporated including support for NFC and 21 Mbps HSPA+ networking. It is also quite light in weight and slim as against the original LG Optimus 3D.
To experience 3D photos, videos and much more stuff on one’s handheld is sheer delight and LG Optimus 3D Max delivers it all. The Optimus 3D Max also matches to some extent the look and feel of other high-end phones mainly because in terms of design, LG has made some significant improvements by reducing the thickness of the device. LG Optimus 3D Max is slightly on the heavy side thanks to the embedded 3D technology but the casing is just 9.6 mm deep and does not feel cumbersome. Overall, we're glad to see that the Optimus 3D MAX has compact dimensions and retain its strong features. It has a nice 4.3" display for a better 3D viewing experience with resolution of480x800 pixels. Taking care of 3D photography are the two 5 megapixels camera sensors which can shoot 3D video at a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels, while 2D recording will go as high as 1080p. LG Optimus 3D Max is definitely a good upgrade in its genre with better form factor and specs and if one prefers 3D phones.
User Interface and UI functionality
The 4.3-inches 3D WVGA display of LG Optimus 3D Max can showcase the 3D content and one can see it without glasses, thanks to the parallax barrier. If 3D is something that charms you, this can’t get better. When one turns on the Optimus 3D Max's display, it springs into life as it is very bright and clear. It might not fare very well in direct sunlight though. One does not need to constantly strain self to reach the far corners and since the 3D capabilities have also been enhanced, the 3D effect is much improved.
Rather disappointingly, the next-generation LG Optimus 3D Max still runs the Android 2.3.6 (Gingerbread) though it could have packed inside the latest version of Android, Ice Cream Sandwich. The reason behind this is quite legitimate as there are issues with the 3D user interface on Ice Cream Sandwich. If LG figures this out, buyers may get a ready update for the Optimus 3D Max later. The Optimus 3D Max user-interface does not run smooth and slight lags are witnessed when scrolling through its homescreens. There are seven home screens available on this handset and these helps in navigating across various apps. The touchscreen is responsive and LG's own overlay on Android is simple and does not detract from the user experience on the Optimus 3D Max. Icons have been given a 3D-cube style in 2D mode to remind you that you're using a 3D phone.
On Optimus 3D Max, it is easy to navigate with the menus and options. The 3D button on the side of the handset takes users to the 3D menu, offering up options such as the 3D gallery, camera, games, applications and video. The 3D effect works well when handset is held straight but is lost if viewing the Optimus 3D Max from the sides.
On the whole, the screen quality and 3D technology has improved as against the original Optimus 3D.
Multimedia features
One gets to see video editing suite for the first time ever on LG Optimus 3D Max. This unique feature allows the user to create some media stuff on their own and adding it to their timeline. One just needs to select 2D and 3D film clips or pictures, audio/video tracks, etc., add and re-order them to make a super quick video. The export function is quick, thanks to the 1.2 GHz dual-core processor of the phone.
The phone also boasts a multi-format music player that can filter media stuff as per album, artists and playlists and features album art cover and background playback.
Pictures and Video quality
The dual-lens cameras have been upgraded to 5 megapixels each. As camcorder, they shoot 1080p HD videos while in 3D mode 720p videos are recorded. The camera features autofocus, LED flash and digital zoom. A nice addition is the option to stream 1080p 3D video to an HD TV using the MHL port of the LG Optimus 3D MAX.
Internet support
The 4.3 inch screen on the Optimus 3D Max is large enough to make viewing webs pages and messages comfortable. One can access high speed Internet via HSDPA+ 21.1Mbit/s or GPRS/EDGE network connection. The integrated web browser is of HTML 5 type with flash support.
Internal and External Memory
The LG Optimus 3D Max runs a 1.2GHz dual-core TI OMAP 4430 processor coupled with RAM worth 1GB. Moreover, there is 8 GB of internal memory to keep the data intact inside. Plus, it supports 32 GB capacity microSD/microSDHC cards.
Applications and Gaming
LG Optimus 3D Max is an Android phone and can source many apps from the Android Market. In fact, a pool of 3D compatible apps can also be downloaded and using them on this handset will be an absolutely divine experience. It doesn’t imply that other apps won’t be as good. All the apps and games that one enjoys on a 2D handset can also be used on LG Optimus 3D Max.
Battery Backup
LG Optimus 3D Max has an in-built standard Li-ion battery of 1520 mAH capacity.
Connectivity Offered
For connectivity, LG Optimus 3D Max has embedded features as Bluetooth 3.0, NFC, Wi Fi and DLNA.
Compare
Every new smartphone is looking to move to quad-core processors and Android version 4.0, Ice Cream Sandwich and considering that the specs on the LG Optimus 3D Max are disappointing. LG Optimus 3D Max might get an upgrade to ICS eventually but there are some genuine hurdles in the path. Google recommends the three capacitive menu buttons layout in any handset which is supposed to run ICS while LG Optimus 3D Max has the four capacitive button strip, which has made optimization for Android 4.0 harder in its case.
Undoubtedly, Optimus 3D Max is unbeatable on the 3D playing field with almost no strong competitors but lack of these two desirable specs is a disadvantage. Plus, the existence of HTC Evo 3D eradicates the total monopoly of LG Optimus 3D Max in this sector.
HTC Evo 3D has a wide 4.3” touch-screen of qHD quality wherein it displays 3D content. There is intelligent and intuitive HTC Sense UI coupled with 1GHz dual core processor. This entertainment and multimedia gadget has immense 3G capabilities along with Wi-Fi and DLNA support. It has quite good dual cameras of 5 megapixels and 1.3 megapixels on rear and front respectively. HTC Hub allows one to have lots of useful and interesting apps on this HTC device too. On the last two aspects, LG phone stagger against HTC Evo 3D. Also, the user-interface of HTC is quite good.
