Huawei Sonic Review
Overall Review
The Huawei Sonic is handset good for those who are keen on sticking to a low budget while wishing to owe an Android device.
It has a reasonable features list and at a very affordable price will give you taste of a unique smartphone experience. First time smartphone users and young teens can put their hands on Huawei Sonic despite of its limitations. For instance, it has a poor camera unit devoid of flash option. The menu icons of the device are actually a put off.
But on a positive note, we find Android features and the flexibility of this operating system in Huawei Sonic smartphone extremely likeable. Also, the 3.5 inch capacitive touch display and looks of the phone are enticing.
As far as the availability of the Huawei Sonic is concerned, there are no issues at all since the handset is readily available. It can be bought exclusively from retail stores viz. Big W, Woolworths and Dick Smith at minimalistic price of just 188 dollars.
User Interface and UI functionality
Huawei has given great regard to the significance of a good display and as such their latest device, the Huawei Sonic has a 3.5 inch capacitive touch display screen. The device is surely not capable of getting huge applause for its designing but it’s far from repulsive. Huawei Sonic looks decent and an upscale version of its predecessor also. Huawei had launched another smartphone, the Huawei IDEOS X1 prior to the launch of Huawei Sonic. But following the footprints of its ancestor, the Huawei Sonic has a complete plastic body. But there’s also a chrome band around its rounded edges, which is a good attempt to add a touch of class to this otherwise simple handset. The rounded edges of Huawei Sonic also make it quite comfortable to hold.
Huawei Sonic has a great feel attached to it because of its refurbished built and design. Users can easily use the standard and far more responsive four touch-sensitive shortcut keys below its display for the operations but sadly these aren't backlit. It goes to the credit of the makers that even at such a low price point, they have not let the display and design of the handset suffer.
The Huawei Sonic has an exceptionally good 3.5 inch capacitive touchscreen which is also large enough to comfortably type over it. The size and dimensions of the display are such that the handset remains proportionate. The resolution of the display is little low and stands at 320x480 pixels. This obviously implies that the text isn't as crisp as on other phones and so is the case with the picture quality. And so, the screen also has poor viewing angles which make it difficult to observe anything clearly in direct sunlight. Even otherwise, it is not one phone which can be compared to the phones with higher resolution screens with latest technologies.
The Huawei Sonic runs the latest version 2.3 'Gingerbread' of Google's Android platform but with a slightly standard Android interface. There are buttons which can let users see all the five home screens together. The live widgets remain and the cube animation is quite commendable particularly while swiping between screens. The toggles for Wi-Fi, GPS, Bluetooth, data and screen auto-rotate in the notifications drop down are also good.
Huawei has altered the look of the menu icons but they do not look good. Thankfully this scenario can be easily changed by downloading any launchers from the Android market that alter the look and feel of the interface.
Huawei Sonic's display is good enough for daily use and much likeable considering the home-screen innovations and the affordable price tag of the device.
Multimedia features
The 3.2-megapixel camera of Huawei Sonic doubles as a VGA video recorder. There is Android Music player in the phone too. However, one would not be particularly enticed with its multimedia features as they are not that good.
Pictures and Video quality
The camera and its interface are poor in case of Huawei Sonic and the camera of the phone is also devoid of flash. As a consequence, it is not possible to do low light photography with Sonic. The quality of the results produced by the camera is poor as they lack detail and there’s plenty of image noise too.
Internet support
The 600 MHz processor certainly restricts the processing power of Huawei Sonic and it therefore does not offer full flash support for Web browsing. It is very difficult for the Sonic to load graphically intense Web pages. The performance of the phone dampens while surfing Internet.
Internal and External Memory
The Huawei Sonic has a microSD card slot for extra data storage and that is located behind the rear battery cover. With limited internal memory and 256 MB RAM, the memory expansion is a definite plus point.
Applications and Gaming
The Huawei Sonic has a modest single core 600MHz processor but the handset easily manages to support multi-touch zooming. It implies that one can easily zoom in and out of certain apps.
Huawei has straightforward file manager, the Documents to Go suite, a voice dialer and an app to backup and restore the data contents of the phone to or from a microSD card. There’s also Hi-Space cloud solution app in the phone.
Battery Backup
Users will get enough battery life on their Huawei Sonic Android smartphone as the battery of the device is power-packed enough for a full day of use in most cases.
Connectivity Offered
The Huawei Sonic has good connectivity features as in there’s a GPS receiver, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity. The Sonic also offers full turn-by-turn navigation capabilities.

Micromax A70 is another budget Android smartphone making news. This phone sports a bit smaller (just a 3.2 inch) capacitive touch-screen display and runs the Google Android (Froyo v 2.2). There’s 5 megapixels autofocus camera (without flash) in Micromax A70 handset and it also has a front-facing VGA camera. This is quite a pleasant inclusion in its specs list which takes it a step ahead of Huawei Sonic. The Micromax A70 is also reasonably priced phone with some added features like 3G HSDPA 7.2 mbps, GPS, Wi-Fi, and Wi-Fi Hotspot.
