HTC Hero A6262 Review
HTC Hero A6262 is an Android based smartphone by the Taiwanese manufacturer, HTC, and this is the third phone in the line by the company that has Android platform. It is another sibling in the A series of handsets and is the first to have HTC Sense user interface. This smartphone stood first not only in one criteria but it is the pioneer in many other aspects also – it is the inaugural handset by the company that has the Lite version of Adobe Flash, a 3.5mm universal headphone and multi-touch ability. This smartphone comes with a very unique design that is not found in any of the contemporary smartphones, as it has an angular chin at the bottom and most of the hardware keys are located in that area only. It carries a slate form factor and is the one of the sleek models available in the market. Both in terms of hardware as well as software this handset is superior than its earlier siblings. HTC Hero has a virtual QWERTY keypad where the keys are aptly spaced to avoid any accidental press. It is blessed with Accelerometer and Digital compass sensors.
HTC Hero A6262 comes packed in a compactable size of 112mm x 56.2mm x 14.4mm and holds 135 grams of weight only. The TFT capacitive touchscreen is 3.2 inch in size (diagonally) and provides a resolution of 320 x 480 pixels with 65K color depth and 180ppi pixel density. The display is made up of scratch resistant Corning Gorilla Glass and supports multi-touch facility. It has HTC's very own Sense UI on top of the Android platform and below the screen there is a touch sensitive trackball that works as a five way navigational D-pad. The phone has built-in loudspeakers and a 3.5 mm headphone jack that acts as an A/V connector. The external memory can be extended up to 32GB using a microSD card slot whereas the internal memory holds 288MB space for RAM and 512MB for ROM. For connectivity options such as GPRS, EDGE, 3G, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g, Bluetooth and USB port are available. It holds a 5 MP auto focus camera with Geo-tagging and touch to focus features. This camera captures an image with a resolution of 2592 x 1944 pixels and can record CIF videos in a size of 320 x 480 pixels by capturing 15 frames per second. It is running on Android v.2.2 Froyo platform and is powered by 528 MHz ARM 11 processor. HTC Hero comes with a standard Li-Ion 1,350 mAh battery that allows talk time up to 7 hours on 3G network and a standby time up to 750 hours on 3G network.
HTC Hero is a pioneer smartphone by the company in many respects and with the added features and applications it is doing good as compared to its siblings.
Overall Review
HTC Hero A6262 is the third Android based smartphone by the Taiwanese smartphones and tablets manufacturer, HTC, and is the part of the most popular A series. It is the first phone to have the jack for 3.5mm universal headphones, multi touch ability and the Lite version of Adobe Flash browser. Along with these it is also the first smartphone by the company that has the most popular HTC Sense user interface, which brought about a new revolution in the market. This smartphone comes in a very unique design where the bottom part of the phone is slightly tilted outwards and carries a slate form factor. With a size of 112mm x 56.2mm x 14.4mm this handset holds a weight of 135 grams, which makes this phones pretty much handable. The design of this smartphone is more sleek and sexy than its earlier kinfolks, HTC Dream and HTC Magic, in terms of both hardware and software as it packs several powerful perks over the previous Android phones. Sense is HTC's custom build of Android that contains stunning UI improvements and unique application features, not to mention support for Flash videos and multi-touch web browsing. Management of contacts becomes a powerful hub that seamlessly integrates calls, texts, emails, social networking and more. The music playing experience is radically improved and widgets and profile settings allow users to truly make their phone a complete entertainment package. In terms of design, HTC Hero brings more style and uniqueness to the Android family. Breaking with the full QWERTY heritage but keeping the trademark angled chin, this smartphone continues the tradition of slim full touchscreen phones amongst its line of smartphones. The device is available in three variants – white, black and brown, where the white version has super Teflon coating over the body to make it strong and robust and helps in making the device dirt free and fingerprints resistant. The frame around the display is finished in very classy brushed aluminum in all the three handsets. This smartphone share the rectangular design of HTC Touch Diamond 2 has even borrowed the quite pleasant brushed aluminum front. The chassis are of matt plastic and provides a premium touch to the device and also gives excellent grip to hands. The elongated angular chin at the bottom of the device makes it stand out of the regular line of smartphones and the blend of a slanting back, chin jutted out in determination, overall size and weight makes the device comfortable to carry around and it fits perfectly in the hands of its users. Almost all hardware keys are located on the slightly protruding lower part of the handset, except for the volume rocker , which is placed on the left side of the device. The front has a fully touch sensitive screen and below the screen there are some keys that are meant for making/receiving a call, to calls up the homescreen, to open the menu and to end a call. Below these four buttons there is a touch sensitive trackball that handles most of the tasks and at the right end of this trackball there is a pill shaped rocker that works for search and back. They all have quite a small size, but are very easy to press. The miniUSB port is placed at a very unusual place, that is, at the bottom whereas the 3.5 mm universal headphone jack is placed on the top area of the device that also works as an A/V connector. The back holds a 5 megapixels snapper that does not have any support for LED flash and under the easy to remove back panel resides the strong battery along with a microSIM card slot. The microSD card slot is also there under the back cover but to a pleasant note, it is hot swappable, which means that there is no need to turn off the device before inserting or removing the memory card. The Menu key is usually used to unlock the screen and launch various context dependent options across the interface, while the main menu itself is handled exclusively via the touchscreen. The Home key always takes one to the main homescreen, while a long press and hold of it will open the multitasking manager. The End key is also used to power the handset on and off. The Search knob is an interesting thing as there is hardly any smartphone in the market that bears the same key. Other than starting a Google search form for making hassle-free Google searches on the go, it also offers a variety of context dependent searches. It will search the contacts in the phonebook, mail messages and contacts, artists in the music library, even POI's on a map. What is missing as a hardware key is a dedicated key for camera and a music player launchpad. The miniUSB port will also works as a charging point for the device. With the Phone Calendar one can easily fix up their daily routine jobs on time. It allows daily, monthly and agenda views, with the latter showing only upcoming events. Creating an entry is easy and users have the option to mark it as a whole day event and set a recurrence pattern, plus the cool feature that add the weather forecast for the specific day. The world clock, alarms, chronometer and timer are unified into a single, personalized menu that is accessible via the widget-based clock. The integrated calculator offers several complex things like finding square roots and calculating trigonometric functions. This smartphone also offers Weather forecast and Yahoo Finance applications to its users. The handset also has a voice recorder so its users can record their voices in different manners for having fun and enjoyment. The alarm clock application is easy to launch with a single tap on the clock icon available on the homescreen. Although HTC Hero lacks a pre-installed To-Do application its users can download one of the many found in the Android Market and it will not take much time. The device has Accelerometer and Digital compass sensors in front where the Accelerometer sensor helps in measuring the orientation or vertical and horizontal positioning of the phone. The most basic application of this is the device knowing when to alternate the view of the screen depending on how you are holding it. The Digital Compass sensor is usually based on a sensor called magnetometer that provides mobile phones with a simple orientation in relation to the Earth's magnetic field. As a result, the phone always knows which way is North so it can auto rotate the digital maps depending on the physical orientation of users.
User Interface and UI functionality
HTC Hero A6262 comes with a TFT capacitive touchscreen that carries a size of 3.2 inches and provides color combinations made from 65K colors. The pixel density of 180 ppi makes the screen looks more crispier and sharp as compared to the previous handsets under the same brand. The display supports a resolution of 320 x 480 pixels and comes with multi touch facility so that its users can give multiple commands with the display at one time. The screen is made up of Corning Gorilla Glass that makes is scratch resistant. This is the first phone by HTC that has HTC Sense UI on top of the Android platform that works amazingly well. Sense UI is a cross between TouchFLO and the stock Android interface that comes with three virtual keys at the bottom of the screen. The left key launches the main menu whereas the middle key is a shortcut to the Phone application and the right key brings up the Add to Home menu. This UI provides customizable homescreens that makes it easier for users to add those icons and widgets on the homescreen that are of much importance and are very oftenly used. The scrollbar at the bottom only gives information about the homescreen that is active and does not perform the function of actual scrolling. HTC has extended the homescreen to seven partitions instead of the usual three in the previously launched smartphones. This smartphone is running on quite an obsolete version of Android, that is, Android v.2.2 Froyo and is powered by 528 MHz ARM 11 processor that helps the device in smooth running of an application. The Qualcomm MSM7200A chipset along with Adreno 130 GPU improves the graphics performance of the device and results in a quality output. The phone also supports GPS via A-GPS that enables the users to determine their current location, time and velocity with respect to their current surrounding. One of the most important novelties in this smartphone is the addition of scenes, which are essentially six custom desktop setups – Work, Travel, Social, etc., and each scene changes the wallpaper and the widgets on the homescreen, for instance, the Work scene has a stocks widget, while the Social offers a Twitter and Facebook widget. These scenes can be modified as per the need but the changes made would prompt you to save the scene as a new one. Switching between scenes takes a couple of seconds but sure allows wide customization - the business and personal mode that other phones offer seems quite a limited solution compared to these scenes. There are seven homescreens and they are customizable beyond recognition through a variety of widgets. Aside from the standard active applications characteristic of Android like analog clock, calendar, search, shortcuts and folders, there are quite a few novelty applications developed by HTC. They are 20 in number with quite many coming in several varieties. The clock has 12 different versions and some of them are quite eye-catchy indeed. Apart from lending variety to the interface, they might come in handy in certain situations due to their varying size on the screen, that is, more widgets can be placed there at the same time. The screen can be unlocked with ease by sliding the fingers in the downward direction.
Multimedia features
HTC Hero A6262 can be called as a multimedia handset as it supports many multimedia features that make this device a better choice than its rivals. Though it does not support FM radio facility but it has other features that can easily amend the loss. The handset sports a 3.5 mm jack that supports all the headphones with the same diameter. This jack can also be used to attach speakers or woofers with the device so that the whole room gets filled with the flow of music and allows its users to enjoy a piece of song. The default music player allows users to filter the audio content by relevant artist, album, genre, composer and whether or not the audio has been purchased. One can create their own playlists and handling all controls is easy. And since HTC Hero does not sports an FM radio, so for streaming audio a third party software is needed. The pre-installed iMeem features an option to search for similar artists and then plays the content a user has chosen. The application works perfectly with all the rage bands. This device supports MP3, AAC+, WAV, AMR and WMA9 audio formats for playback and AMR format for audio recording. Video formats supported are MP4, H.263, H.264 and WMV9 with a maximum width of 640 pixels.
Pictures and Video quality
HTC Hero A6262 sports a 5 MP auto focus shooter that comes with Geo-tagging, digital zoom and touch focus features. This snapper takes images with a resolution of 2592 x 1944 pixels and can record CIF videos in a size of 320 x 480 pixels by capturing 15 frames per second. The available settings are decent, one can set the resolution, white balance, brightness, self-portrait, image quality, add Geo-tagging and different effects. Modern features like face-detection and macro mode are missing. As there is no support to LED flash so one will feel quite reluctant while taking snapshots in low light or dark ambiance as the output will not be up to the mark. The good thing is that after taking a picture, users can instantly share it via Facebook, Tweeter, Picasa, Google Mail, Flickr or a message or e-mail with their friends and social group. Captured videos can be uploaded directly to YouTube. The overall quality of the captured images is not very bad but they also do not fall in the good rated category. The secondary camera is missing here so users cannot make video calls with this handset to their family and friends.
Internet support
HTC Hero A6262 provides Internet support through EDGE of class 10 with a speed up to 236.8kbps, GPRS of class 10 with 32 - 48kbps of speed, 3G at HSPA+ speed and Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g via WLAN network. The downloading speed is good and the web pages occurred within seconds without taking much time to load. The HTML browser makes the web browsing experience fun as it allows the users to easily toggle between the web pages. It is the first Android device to pack any Flash support. The browser will run animated banners, Flash games and other web content just like on a regular computer. The browsing application is based on the same open source WebKit platform as Mobile Safari and the browser of S60 and recent S40 Nokia phones. Pages load quickly, and thumb navigation is just as smooth and easy as on Apple iPhone. This browser gives the option to have multiple web pages open at the same time. The capacitive screen securing the browser's fluid response along with multi-touch make surfing on HTC Hero a real pleasure.
Internal and External Memory
HTC Hero A6262 is loaded with an internal storage space of 288MB for RAM and 512MB for ROM that allows smooth functioning of the heavy applications. The memory of the device can be extended externally with the help of a microSD card slot that can expand the memory up to 32GB, where a SD card of 2GB comes pre-installed in the device.
Applications and Gaming
HTC Hero A6262 is loaded with Android based and Google based applications and there are some HTC applications also that comes with HTC Sense UI. Applications like beebPlayer, Light Racer, File Browser, Super Mario sounds and ringtones and many more are there in the device and still the users can download loads of free applications from the Android market. There are some games pre-loaded on this smartphone and one can also download various Java supported games as this handset supports Java via Java MIDP emulator.
Battery Backup
HTC Hero A6262 holds a strong standard Li-Ion 1,350 mAh battery that allows a talk time up to 7 hours on 3G network and up to 8 hours on 2G network. This battery also provides a standby time up to 750 hours on 3G network and up to 440 hours on 2G network. One can also enjoy multimedia features on this smartphone for long hours without any fear of battery drainage.
Connectivity Offered
HTC Hero A6262 offers connectivity to GSM network only for 2G and 3G networks at a frequency of 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900 MHz and 900 / 2100 MHz, accordingly. One can download data at a 3G HSDPA speed of 7.2 Mbps and files can be uploaded at an 3G HSUPA speed of 2.0Mbps, which is a good speed as compared to the other contemporary handsets.
Compare
HTC Hero A6262 is a nice feature piece of gadget that is running on Android platform and is the first smartphone by HTC that has HTC Sense UI on top of the Android platform. But since the platform on which it is running is very outdated so the other low end smartphones that have more advanced technology and platform will get more eyes as compared to HTC Hero. Smartphones like Samsung Galaxy Y, Samsung Galaxy Y Duos, Nokia 500, HTC Desire V, Sony Xperia Walkman, etc. can easily take over the market of HTC Hero because of their advanced features and applications.
