BlackBerry Torch 9860 Review
BlackBerry Torch 9860 is the BlackBerry's gift to multimedia addicts. Powered with 1.2 GHz processor the smartphones seamlessly integrates with BlackBerry 7 OS and Liquid Graphics to offer an unbeatable experience of gaming, surfing, socializing and watching videos with smoother multi-tasking and navigation. A spectacular 3.7 inch touch screen is quite a big screen by the standards of BlackBerry smartphones. The BlackBerry Torch 9860 has a 1.2GHz processor, 768MB of RAM and 4 GB of user-accessible storage. This can be expanded with microSD card, although its slightly disturbing to remove the battery to be able to access the card slot. User can capture life's happy surprises with 720p HD video which can be relived over and over again. The BlackBerry Torch 9860 owns a 5MP camera to shoot amazing photos with face detection, 4x zoom and image stabilization, making it a picture perfect phone. The BlackBerry Torch 9860 comes with connectivity options like Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and GPS along with quad-band GSM and HSPA mobile broadband network. It can make life more lively with stunning reality apps like the WikiTude World Browser to learn about the surroundings in real-time. Can't believe but Torch 9860 misses out on front camera and FM Radio, but for those who like to use BB services, enjoy surfing and watching YouTube on the move, this smartphone can do wonders.
Overall Review
Despite a few failures that Research In Motion (RIM) had to face with the touchscreen based Storm series, they never backed out from the league. Showing complete effort in the keyless category with their ‘Torch’ family, Blackberry Torch 9860 is their latest launch. The phone was announced on August 3, 2011. The Torch family was started by Torch 9800 in the late spring of 2010 and the phone was marketed as “the best blackberry ever”. The phone did make a huge impact on the market and since then the legacy is continued. The current flagship is held by Torch 9860. After a long wait, Blackberry has finally launched a proper touchscreen phone and this phone, apart from being designed as a typical blackberry that are totally business oriented, also offers a bundle of multimedia features. The phone is supported by the Blackberry’s latest OS 7. Blackberry’s QWERTY keyboards are definitely best among all the phones, but you will surely not miss the keyboard in this one due to the presence of an excellent touchscreen and the trademark track pad. After a disappointing impact of the Storm range on the market, Torch 9860 has a massive point to prove in the market. With the rocky phase of Blackberry going on in the market, this phone has to provide stability and bring back RIM on track.
User Interface and UI functionality
Blackberry Torch 9860 supports Blackberry OS 7, which is the latest upgrade of Blackberry. The OS has amazingly hot looks and the bigger screen of Torch 9860 gives OS 7 a huge opportunity to flaunt its styling and design. Next, there is a next to perfect track pad and a touch screen. Torch 9860 features a 3.7-inch TFT capacitive touchscreen, one of the largest among the Blackberries. The screen gives a resolution of 480 X800 pixels and a pixel density of 252 ppi. The touchscreen is highly responsive with a vibrant display of 16 million colors. The track pad though does not have much of a use because almost everything is clickable. The phone has an overall height, width and depth of 120 mm, 62 mm and 11.5 mm and weighs about 135 grams. The phone is quite easy and comfortable to handle. Blackberry has given Torch 9860 a very subtle look consisting of a plain plastic front and a metal-made battery cover with soft rubbery finish, unlike the imposing Storm phones.
Multimedia features
The music player and gallery in BlackBerry Torch 9860 are almost similar to the one in OS 5 with just slight changes. With the subtle and sober look Blackberry features, the music player and gallery remain the same with their decent looks. The supported audio formats are .mp4, .m4a, .3gp, .m4v, .avi, .asf, .wma, .mp3, .flac, .ogg, .aac, .amr, .wav, .mid, .qcp. The supported video formats are .mp4, .m4a, .3gp, .m4v, .avi, .asf, .wmv and the supports picture formats are .bmp, .jpg, .gif, .png, .tif, .wbmp. Torch 9860 supports DivX and XviD codecs very well and manages to view videos up to 720p without any problem. The video quality is decent and the bigger screen is an obvious advantage for the multimedia region. The audio output is one of the best among the Blackberry family but definitely not even close to best in the market.
Pictures and Video quality
Blackberry Torch 9860 is equipped with 5-megapixel camera with 4x digital zoom. RIM has finally included the auto-focus feature in this one after the disappointing experience in Bold 9900. Other features included in the camera are geo-tagging, image stabilization and face detection. There is no secondary camera. The camera quality is quite impressive for a Blackberry standard. Torch 9860 is a new generation of Blackberry phones that is capable of recording 720p HD videos. It is capable of shooting at 1280 X 720 pixels at 30 frames per second.
Internet support
RIM did promise an improved web browser in Torch 9860, and this new improved browser is a nice improvement on blackberry part. Blackberry Torch 9860 uses HTML browser. The updated browser is faster and more responsive but still lacks flash. Zooming takes a second or two, and navigation experience is definitely not better than in iPhone, but it is not too bad either. It is better to use the track pad for navigation rather than the touchscreen.
Internal and External Memory
Blackberry Torch 9860 comes with an internal memory of 4 GB which is expendable up to 32 GB using micro SD card. This ample storage is fit for the music lovers that have a huge collection of songs. It features 768 MB RAM and 1.2 GHz chipset, which avoid lagging of phone while running various applications or games.
Applications and Gaming
BlackBerry Torch 9860 comes with the lots of preinstalled games that are pretty decent and enjoyable. The user can further download more from the web along with various other BlackBerry applications.
Battery Backup
BlackBerry Torch 9860 comes powered by the standard lithium ion battery of 1230 mAh that makes sure that the user gets to operate on their device for a long duration without being interrupted. In terms of stats, the battery gives the user a talk time of up to 4 hours 40 minutes in 2G and up to 6 hours and 50 minutes in 3G. The user also gets a talk time of up to 330 hours in 2G and up to 320 hours in 3G. The music fans also get the luxury of listening to music for up to 44 hours.
Connectivity Offered
Blackberry Torch 9860 offers wide range of connectivity options. It has an 802.11 b/g/h Wi-Fi connectivity and the Wi-Fi manager takes good care of all the connections. It has micro USB port to connect to the computer and also contains v2.1 Bluetooth to connect to other devices. It is also equipped with blackberry messenger 6, which has been a revolution so far.
Compare
The traditionally high priced Blackberry Torch 9860 has many rivals. Samsung Galaxy S2, Xperia S and HTC Sensation offer you a lot more at similar price range. Also, the iPhone 4 and the latest launch iPhone 5 are in the race. These phones have a refined touch experience and are bundled with more features, still Blackberries have their own rules and it is definitely difficult to challenge them.
