Blackberry Torch 9810 Review
Blackberry Torch 9810 is a touch and type business Smartphone by RIM that is running on the latest BlackBerry OS v.7.1 that brings some new and advanced features and applications to the handset. It is a slider phone where the QWERTY keypad is placed under the 3.2 inches wide capacitive touchscreen that appears when the screen slides in the upward direction. This fluid all-touch display with slide out QWERTY keypad ensures an incredible multimedia experience where you will never miss the efficient typing with the classic BlackBerry keyboard. You can also use the virtual QWERTY keypad where the keys are very aptly spaced so that the chance of any accidental press reduces to a large extent. Being powered by the 1.2GHz processor, this droid provides a blazing fast speed for browsing, socializing and gaming. And the Wi-Fi connectivity with the 3G HSPA+ speeds connect you with the world the way you want without letting you wait for long. The size of the device, 111mm x 62mm x 14.6mm, is also very compact and with 161 grams of weight is easy to carry for long time in hands.
BlackBerry Torch 9810 holds a very huge amount of internal storage space of 8GB with 768MB for RAM that allows you to save your data in the phone memory. You can also increase the external memory of the device up to 32GB via a microSD card. The 3.2 inches wide display provides a screen resolution of 480 x 640 pixels with 16M of color depth. It supports multi touch facility and has an optical trackpad below the screen with four hardware keys. For Internet connectivity you have plenty of options such as EDGE, GPRS, 3G, Wi-Fi, UMA, etc. and to sync your BlackBerry with the other compatible devices you can utilize the options like Bluetooth and USB port. The 5 megapixels auto focus camera with LED flash support takes stunning pictures and videos with features like Geo-tagging, face detection and image stabilization. The latest BlackBerry OS 7.1 brings updates to BlackBerry Traffic, BlackBerry Travel and some more applications with improvements to the search function also.
BlackBerry Torch 9810 is blessed with a standard Li-Ion 1,270mAh battery that allows a talk time of up to 6 hours 30 minutes on 2G and 5 hours 50 minutes on 3G. You can listen to your favorite numbers anytime and at any place without thinking about battery as it is very powerful.
Overall Review
Research In Motion came out with the BlackBerry Torch 9810 last year, hoping to gain some ground against its iOS and Android-powered rivals, which have significantly overshadowed RIM’s previous dominance in the smartphone market. After the failure of the Torch 9800 in reversing RIM’s fortunes, the pressure came on the Torch 9810, equipped with the new BlackBerry OS 7, to re-establish BlackBerry as a dominant name in the smartphone segment.
The dimensions of the BlackBerry Torch 9810 are 111mm x 61.9mm x 14.5mm. The unique feature of the device is that it offers both touch and keypad facility- you get a cool 3.2-inch touchscreen as well as a slide-out full QWERTY keypad. Under the hood, the Torch 9810 is powered by a 1.2 GHz processor along with 768MB of RAM. The device features a good 5 MP rear-facing camera that has LED flash, 4X digital zoom and continuous auto focus. You can also record videos in 720p HD. In addition, the clicker also offers many other features like face detection, geo-tagging and image stabilization to give the user a satisfying experience with the camera.
User Interface and UI functionality
BlackBerry OS 7 doesn’t seem very different from OS 6- atleast at first glance. Most of the major improvements have been done internally, with the user interface being pretty much unchanged. The most prominent difference is that OS 7 features the brand new Liquid Graphics interface, bringing better graphics and improved performance to the interface. While OS 6 featured universal search, OS 7 went one step further by equipping the search function with voice functionality- similar to Android. After tapping on the microphone icon located beside the search field, just speak out whatever you want to search for and then tap the ‘Done’ button. Your search item will then appear in the search box.
Besides this, there are several other improvements made in OS 7, including recording of 720p HD video, support for augmented reality apps and even a new BlackBerry browser featuring HTML 5 video support and a just-in-time JavaScript compiler. Although BlackBerry OS 7 includes NFC-support, this feature is currently unavailable on the Torch 9810.
Multimedia features
As mentioned earlier, the BlackBerry Torch 9810 features a 5-megapixel camera with continuous autofocus, LED flash and 4X digital zoom. The 5MP clicker is typical of all phones in the BlackBerry Torch family so this one is no different-atleast at first glance. However, once you spend a little more time tinkering with the camera, you realize that it packs in a lot more features such as image stabilization, geo-tagging and face detection, making it a pretty good package overall.
Other than that, music and video playback is decent, although video consumption is more suited on the BlackBerry Torch 9860. The music player supports the following formats: - MP3, WMA, WAV and eAAC+, while the video player supports the following formats: DivX, XviD, MP4, WMV, H.263 and H.264.
Pictures and Video quality
With the BlackBerry Torch 9810, you can be assured of superior graphics for watching movies and playing games- thanks to the proprietary Liquid Graphics technology that has debuted on this device. The Torch 9810 boasts of a better screen resolution as compared to the Torch 9800- 640x480 pixels, as against the latter’s 480x360 pixels. The graphics displayed certainly look smoother and sharper and due to the higher pixel density, even the text looks crisper, allowing easy reading.
Internet support
The BlackBerry Torch 9810 lets you connect to the Web both via 3G and Wi-Fi. The device features an HSPA+ radio which can achieve speeds of around 14.4Mbps down and 2Mbps up, which is already only average in today’s age of 4G LTE smartphones, giving much higher speeds. However, these speeds are still very appealing atleast in the Indian market.
Internal and External Memory
Internal storage on the BlackBerry Torch 9810 is pretty roomy at 8GB. In the case that even 8GB proves insufficient for your needs, you can always use the microSD slot and expand external memory upto 32GB.
Applications and Gaming
The BlackBerry Torch 9810 is loaded with various social networking applications including Facebook and Twitter. BBM is obviously a given! In addition, you can view your entire social networking and RSS feeds all in one view. In addition, the device allows you to update multiple social networks simultaneously in one post. If you’re the business-minded type, the phone offers Document viewer and Push e-mail support.
Battery Backup
The BlackBerry Torch 9810 runs on a standard Li-Ion battery of 1270 mAh capacity, providing talk time of around 6 hours on 2G and 5 hours on 3G networks. The device offers a total standby time of around 308 hours.
Connectivity Offered
The BlackBerry Torch 9810 allows you to surf the Internet through Wi-Fi or 3G. There is a microUSB port on the left side of the phone (v2.0). In addition, there is Bluetooth v2.1 with A2DP. The device comes preloaded with BlackBerry Maps and also the GPS feature that ensures that you stay on the right track no matter where you are.
Compare
While comparing the BlackBerry Torch 9810 with the BlackBerry Torch 9860, one can’t help but notice many obvious differences. First of course is the price- while the Torch 9810 is available for around Rs. 21,900, the Torch 9860 however is available at a tad lower Rs. 19,173. Also, while the Torch 9810 provides 8GB of internal memory, the Torch 9860 provides only half of that. However, the most significant difference between the two phones is that the Torch 9810 allows the users the option to switch between touchscreen-typing and QWERTY keypad-typing but the Torch 9860 limits the user to only touchscreen-typing. This may not be very appealing to BlackBerry loyalists who stick to the brand mostly because of its famous QWERTY keypad.
News Updates
Just one year after its official launch, the BlackBerry Torch 9810 was discontinued by Canadian network carrier TELUS. While the silver edition has already disappeared, the white edition is also going to be stopped soon. This is mainly because RIM wants to launch new devices running on BlackBerry OS 10, which require the existing products to be taken out of the production cycle.
