BlackBerry Porsche Review
BlackBerry Porsche Design P'9981 is driven to offer you the performance you demand, the power you need and the style you wear. Drafted by Porsche Design, sculpted in stainless steel, finished in leather, light weight like a pen, produced by RIM and powered by BlackBerry, the Porsche Design P’9981 smartphone is epitome of luxury.
With a 2.8-inch full touchscreen TFT display, the smartphone adorns a futuristic QWERTY keyboard formerly known as the BlackBerry Knight. Porsche works with GSM as well as HSDPA , UMTS, HSUPA technologies. The model is made special with an exclusive Porsche Design UI and a Wikitude World Browser augmented reality app. The phone comes with second-generation WebKit browser.
Design of BlackBerry Porsche Design P'9981 follows the motif of BlackBerry Bold 9900 but with few tricky changes with the aerial system and few others. The keyboard comes from the same casting steel frame as the phone is crafted from a single block of metal making it a robust handset. That keyboard of the smartphone is just as good as all the BB QWERTY keyboards and while it runs BlackBerry OS 7 RIM has allowed Porsche to frame the OS so as to create a new set of icons to go exclusively with the hardware design.
Nothing exemplary, BlackBerry Porsche Design P'9981 runs Qualcomm Snapdragon 1.2 GHz processor with a 768 MB RAM System memory that can comfortably accommodate 8000 MB built-in storage. Of course, with the storage expansion capacity through the hot swappable microSD card slot up to 40GB. The candy bar smartphone features a handsome 5 mega pixel camera with LED, Digital zoom and geo-tagging features. It also serves as a video camera with 720 p HD clarity making it a good camcorder. The capacitative multi touch screen with fast fluid animation and instant responses from the liquid graphics on the high resolution display makes photography and video recording an unforgettable experience. People can go musical with inbuilt audio and video player.
New features and innovative apps like Wikitude opportunes more dynamic ways to interact and get connected with the world. Near Field Communication (NFC) availability ensures easy connection with other NFC-enabled devices and smart tags making life convenient. Connectivity is offered through Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, GPS and 3G options. The P'9981 model gets a premium PIN that allows the user of the device to find another P'9981 user in a crowd. Your prestige is immediately recognized as there are a limited edition PIN series mobiles available only with the Porsche Design P’9981 smartphone from BlackBerry.
Overall Review
While wondering about the high priced phones, Nokia Oro, Vertu and Motorola Aura surely strike your mind. Research In Motion, RIM, paired up with Porsche, a name in Automobile excellence, to design a phone that will definitely be a masterpiece and something that stands out from the rest. Joining the league of two grand phones, Blackberry Porsche is a class apart. Though RIM has been suffering from a rocky phase with a lot of ups and downs, yet they had the guts to collaborate with the Porsche Design Studios and produce a phone that is not meant for the general crowd. Blackberry is a CEO’s best friend, so why not Porsche Design’s CEO, Huergen Gessler, lend his hand to produce an elegant masterpiece. The main motive behind the production of heavily priced Blackberry Porsche was to create something that is a class apart, totally different from other Blackberry phones, something equipped with the best of everything. But the uniqueness wasn’t too much. Apart from the elegant design, every other detail was almost similar to Blackberry Bold 9900. The stainless steel, leather back, metal keyboard keys and glass navigation keys does not really justify the high price tag. Like other high budget phones that came into the market, Blackberry Porsche is also meant to be sold as limited editions.
User Interface and UI functionality
Blackberry Porsche is a gorgeous looking phone. The sophisticated design of the phone reflects the hard work of the designers. The phone flaunts a stainless steel body with elegant curves and polished edges. Blackberry Porsche features a 2.8-inch TFT capacitive giving a resolution of 640 X 480 pixels with a pixel density of 286 ppi. The touch is very sensitive and the phone also contains Blackberry’s trademark, the optical track pad. Talking about the dimensions, Blackberry Porsche has an overall height, width and depth of 115 mm, 67 mm and 11.3 mm. It weighs just 155 grams. The battery cover on the back is wrapped in genuine leather one. Truly, the most interesting feature of the phone is its keyboard. Each individual QWERTY keypad key is cut out of metal and the navigation keys are cut out of glass. The keys glow white in dark and the keypad is bit difficult to use because of the shorter keys.
Multimedia features
With a high price tag, Blackberry Porsche carries a huge responsibility on its head to deliver much more than the available phones in the market. The phone offers various multimedia features that includes a music player that supports .mp4, .m4a, .3gp, .m4v, .avi, .asf, .wmv, .wma, .mp3, .flac, .ogg, .aac, .amr, .wav, .mid audio format. It also features a video player that supports .mp4, .m4a, .3gp, .m4v, .avi, .asf, .wmv, .wma video format and .bmp, .jpg, .gif, .png, .tif, .wbmp picture format. Covering almost all the available audio and video formats, the phone is a treasure for music lovers. The phone contains a 3.5 mm stereo headset and a micro USB port on the left side. It also features hands-free speakerphone and dual microphone for echo cancellation and background noise suppression.
Pictures and Video quality
Blackberry Porsche is equipped with just a 5-megapixel EDoF camera, which is below par for a two grand phone. There is no secondary camera and the camera clicks are far from a perfect one. The close-up pictures end up being inevitably blurred due to the EDoF sensor used and long distance shots lack white balance. The camera provides a resolution of 2592 X 1944 pixels with a LED flash that is quite effective during improper lights. The camera offers features such as geo-tagging, face detection and image stabilization. The video playback is 720p, but should have been 1080p. The camera quality is no better than its brother Bold 9900. But with a heavy price tag, the camera quality was expected to be a better one and definitely a step ahead of the one used in previous Blackberry models.
Internet support
Blackberry Porsche offers various Internet connectivity features such as EDGE (Enhanced Data Rates for GSM Evolution) and GPRS (General Packet Radio Service). Apart from the HTML Browser, the phone supports various messaging facilities such as SMS, MMS, E-mail, Push E-mail and IM. Since the device is powered by Blackberry OS 7.0, the internet speed is well enough. The phone also has A-GPS support that will guide you to your destination without any problem. Blackberry Porsche also has Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, dual-band. The phone has second-generation WebKit browser.
Internal and External Memory
Blackberry Porsche comes loaded with an 8 GB internal memory that is expandable up to 32 GB. The massive storage capacity will come handy for the music lovers and entrepreneurs that need to store huge amount of data. All the applications, games and other files can easily fit in the 32 GB space available. The phone comes equipped with 768 MB RAM that could have been a little more. But the 768 MB is sufficient enough to run heavy applications without any lag.
Applications and Gaming
The phone is powered by latest Blackberry OS 7.0 and there is a scope of immense gaming experience. There are lots of games and applications available on Blackberry App World and with a single touch, you can access them all on your powerful device. The phone is capable of running of every application the Blackberry App World features. RIM has worked hard enough to produce applications matching up to the level of iOS and Android. The 1.2 GHz processor is capable of running heavy games and applications on the device.
Battery Backup
Blackberry Porsche comes equipped with 1230 mAh lithium-ion battery, which is capable of giving 5.5 hours of talk time. The stand-by time offered by the battery is 8.9 days and audio playback time is 48.01 hours.
Connectivity Offered
Blackberry Porsche offers GSM connectivity at a bandwidth of 850/900/1800/1900 MHz for 2G network while for 3G network at a bandwidth of 850/1900/2100 MHz. The phone features micro USB v2.0 port and Bluetooth v2.1.
Compare
The latest launch of Blackberry, Blackberry Porsche has no competitor in the market. With such a heavy price tag on its head, it cannot be compared to any other phone in the market. Also, the phone is launched as a limited edition model and not to be a blockbuster in the market.
News Updates
Blackberry Porsche, the highly luxurious phone, was launched in December 2011. Powered by Qualcomm MSM8566 snapdragon chipset and with the latest NFC technology, the phone is equipped with all the necessities a phone should have. Targeting at the upper class of the market, the phone has definitely attracted various rich men and women of the world.
