Blackberry Playbook 64 GB Review
BlackBerry PlayBook 64 GB from Research in Motion (RIM) is a professional-grade tablet that packs in powerful features with a new operating system. The device runs on a highly intuitive and user friendly QNX operating system that gives smooth multi-tasking experience and can run various apps simultaneously in real time. PlayBook is powered by a dual-core 1 GHz Cortex-A9 running on TI OMAP 4430 chipset with PowerVR SGX540 graphics and 1 GB RAM that complements the operating system to deliver a very fluid experience.
Measuring 194 mm x 130 mm x 10 mm and weighing 425 grams, BlackBerry PlayBook is designed in a form factor that is easy to carry around. It sports a sharp and vivid 7 inch LCD display that has resolution of 1024 x 600 pixels and supports 4-fingered multi-touch gestures. It also has two stereo speakers placed at the sides of the screen bezel and capable of providing surround audio output. PlayBook is also loaded with various sensors like ambient light, accelerometer, gyroscope and digital compass. Blackberry PlayBook 64 GB comes loaded with dual cameras. The front facing camera has a resolution of 3 megapixels while the back camera offers a 5 megapixels resolution. Both the cameras are capable of recording full HD 1080p videos at 30fps.
Blackberry PlayBook 64 GB draws its power from a standard 5300 mAh Li-Po battery which is rated to provide 10 hours of battery life. This version of PlayBook comes pre-loaded with 64 GB of internal storage and does not have any memory card slot. It supports a wide range of connectivity options. Bluetooth connectivity lets you send and share files with other devices. It also lets you jack a keyboard and a mouse to it for ease of use. There is also an HDMI port for connecting to HDTV or monitor and playing back full HD 1080p video. The unique feature of the HDMI output is that it can show separate contents on the tablet and the TV which it is connected to.
To surf the internet PlayBook has an ultra-fast Wireless-N Wi-Fi support and a feature rich Webkit browser. The browser has a built-in support for Adobe Flash Player 10.1 and Adobe Mobile AIR as well as HTML5. The Documents ToGo application lets you view and edit PPT, DOC and XLS files right on the tablet. BlackBerry smartphone users have an additional benefit of using BlackBerry Bridge. Using BlackBerry Bridge, the PlayBook can wirelessly connect to BlackBerry smartphone for real-time access to email, calendar, address book and task list, Documents ToGo and BBM.
Overall Review
Blackberry has not had a great time in the smartphone market ever since the arrival of Android devices but the story has been different in the tablet segment with the company making headways in the same. The Blackberry Playbook managed to overtake Apple's iPad and Samsung Galaxy Tab which is a achievement in itself and has received rave reviews from the consumers. Blackberry Playbook 64 GB has the dimensions 194mm x 130mm x 10mm and weighs 425 grams. Its 7 inch screen gives a pixel density of 170ppi, which is sober enough and hence clear enough for the user to enjoy videos or playing games on the gadget. The 64GB internal storage capacity is well backed by the 1GB RAM that makes sure that the user can access the resources of the system at a quick pace. There is no microSD card slot facility as the device is available in three variants in terms of memory with 16 and 32GB being the other two variants. The web works smoothly with Blackberry Playbook 64 GB that allows the user to open multiple tabs with great speed. Other data connectivity features include a USB port and the Bluetooth feature.
Entertainment is also well looked after with a music player, a video player and some fun games that are sure to keep the users entertained and engaged. The camera of 5 megapixel works really well in bright light although in comparison to Apple's iSight camera, it does seem a little behind. But the device also offers secondary camera of 3 megapixels which is far more than what other tablets offer and allows the user to make web calls. As far as the operating system is concerned, the BlackBerry Tablet OS is actually more efficient than Android, a feat that the company has not been able to achieve with their Smartphones. The device is further powered by the Dual core 1GHz processor as far as the hardware back up is concerned. Finally the battery of 5,300 mAh is a pleasant surprise, a segment that has always been Blackberry's weakness. The device is available in the color Black whereas the other prominent features offered by the device include Micro HDMI port, Document viewer, Organizer and Predictive text input.
User Interface and UI functionality
Blackberry Playbook 64 GB has a 7 inch TFT capacitive touchscreen that gives 16 million colors along with a resolution of 600 by 1024 pixels and offers a pixel density of 170ppi. The screen can be interacted with through the multi touch technology.

Internal and External Memory

The user can then keep a huge collection of data including songs, games, images and videos without worrying about the memory space running out.
Applications and Gaming
Blackberry Playbook 64GB has loads of games and apps that are preinstalled in the device which keeps the user on their edge. Still this remains that one department where the device lacks or falls behind Android as the pool of choices that are left for the user to select from is significantly less when put in perspective against what Android has to offer.
Battery Backup
Blackberry Playbook 64 GB comes powered by the standard lithium ion battery of 5,300 mAh which is more than anyone would have expected from Blackberry. The user than gets loads of time to operate on the device without his or her entertainment being cut short. The user can then operate on the device for up to 10 hours.
Connectivity Offered
Blackberry Playbook 64 GB offers a decent number of data connectivity features including the bluetooth facility that allows the user to connect with other devices, be it laptops, Smartphones or tablets and exchange data with it where the data exchanged may include music files, games, images and videos. There is also the USB port that facilitates the user to connect pen drives or any other device that supports a USB port to the tablet in order to retrieve data from it or send data to that connected device. The Wi-Fi feature allows the user to visit the desired web sites including Facebook, Twitter or even check mails.
Compare
Blackberry Playbook 64 GB when compared to Apple iPad 2 has a better RAM with the former offering a 1GB RAM as compared to the latter's 0.5GB. The Blackberry Playbook 64 GB is also narrower and lighter as compared to Apple iPad 2. Video recording quality is also better with Blackberry Playbook 64 GB and same can be said about the camera with the former featuring a 5 megapixel camera as whereas the latter features a 0.7 megapixels cameara. The secondary camera is again better with Blackberry Playbook 64 GB with 3 megapixels which is considerably better than Apple iPad2's 0.3 megapixels. Pixel density offered by the Blackberry Playbook 64 GB is 170ppi, which is again reasonably better that Apple iPad2's 132ppi.
News Updates
Blackberry Playbook 64 GB released three years ago and has done very well till date. The company would be hoping to translate the success in to its newly launched BlackBerry Z10 and BlackBerry Q10 which feature the BlackBerry 10 operating system. These gadgets would be competing against the likes of Apple iPhone 5 and Samsung Galaxy SIII.
