Blackberry Curve 9380 Review

BlackBerry Curve 9380 nicknamed as Orlando will be the fist fully touchscreen Curve model. Although, there is no news about its price or availability from RIM, but gathered some information and official launch is expected soon. BlackBerry Curve 9380 is shaped with an idea of cutting a few edges here and there to make it smaller 3.25 inch touchscreen anticipated to be released at an economical price compared to its predecessor Curve series touchphones.

RIM's latest product in Curve series, BlackBerry Curve 9380 will run on BlackBerry operating system 7 and owns respectable 800 MHz single core processor not to give a chance to users to crib about the processing speed of various applications. Curve 9380 offers an onboard storage of 1 GB with 512 MB RAM for ample storage. It also features the same 5-megapixel camera and NFC chip as the Curve phones. Other features included GPS, Wi-Fi, MicroUSB and Bluetooth which are almost mandatory features nowadays. Another phone from BlackBerry portfolio will be Bold 9790, codenamed Bellagio will have conventional QWERTY keyboard. BlackBerry Curve 9380 without the QWERTY, a full touch version of Curve and compact size will give a refreshing feel to BlackBerry's customized style.

Overall Review

The Curve range of Blackberry was started in 2007 with its 8300 series. Curve phones are the entry-level phones of Blackberry in the market. Known for its affordable pricing, Curve series has made a strong impact in the market with the elegant looks and Blackberry tag on its head. Blackberry Curve 9380 is Research In Motion’s first ever Curve with a touchscreen. Blackberry Curve 9380 is yet another budget phone by Blackberry in the Curve family and it should attract buyers because of its cheap pricing and Blackberry OS 7 experience. It is basically a cheaper version of Blackberry Torch 9860 with less capable processor and smaller resolution display. After its announcement in November 2011, it grabbed the attention of many buyers and surely created a sensation among the entry-level segment of the market.

User Interface and UI functionality

Blackberry Curve 9380 sports a 3.2-inches TFT Capacitive touchscreen giving a resolution of 360 X 480 pixels. The pixel density offered is 188 ppi. The operating system supported by the phone is Blackberry OS 7 with a few up gradations. The home screen looks good and the equipped track pad is Blackberry’s efficient weapon. The track pad offers you the optimum sensitivity even though almost everything on the phone is touchable. The overall height, width and depth of the phone are 109 mm, 60 mm, and 11.5 mm respectively and it weighs just 98 grams. The phone is made up entirely of plastic and this is a cause of its lightweight. The loudspeaker grill is fitted at the bottom and there are various dedicated keys for camera, power, lock, volume and mute. Blackberry OS 7 produce excellent graphics and smoother touch.

Multimedia features

Blackberry Curve 9380 is bundled with various multimedia features such as audio player, full HD video player, FM radio and several other. Gallery in Blackberry Curve 9380 is similar to the one in Blackberry OS 6. Zooming and toggling is quite friendly. RIM has definitely made a few changes in the music player with various new options. The phone supports various audio formats such as 3gp2, .m4v, .avi, .wma, .wmv, .mp3, .flac, .ogg, .aac, .amr, .wav, .mid, .mp4. The video formats supported by the phone are .mp4, .m4a, .3gp, .avi, .asf and the picture formats supported are .bmp, .jpg, .gif, .png, .tif, and .wbmp. The use of track pad offers a better experience rather than using the touch screen while toggling through songs or images. One of the most disappointing feature in Blackberry Curve 9380 is its poor audio output. When you plug-in your headphone, the sound quality is really poor with very high distortion levels.

Pictures and Video quality

Blackberry Curve 9380 is equipped with a 5-megapixel camera with LED flash. It offers a resolution of 2592 X 1944 pixels. The camera comes with a few features such as geo-tagging, face detection and image stabilization. The picture quality of the phone is average with the absence of a few features such as white balance and exposure compensation. The phone surely lacks HD video recording, but the video quality is good. The frame rate is quite good and the LED light can be used as video light.

Internet support

Thanks to the latest Blackberry OS 7, Blackberry Curve 9380 features the all-new web browser that is very friendly to use. It offers quick response and multi zooming but like other Blackberry’s, lacks flash. When you zoom in on a page, it takes one or two seconds to adjust the text. Using a track pad while browsing, a virtual mouse cursor automatically appears and is quite efficient.

Internal and External Memory

Blackberry Curve 9380 offers an internal memory of just 512 MB that is not enough. This is expandable up to 32 GB using an external micro SD card. 32 GB of space is quite enough for storing a huge collection of songs, applications and games. Blackberry Curve 9380 also has 512 MB RAM, which makes the phone a little slow while running hefty applications.

Applications and Gaming

Blackberry offers various applications and games that are available on Blackberry App World. It is quite well organized and navigation through it is quite easy. The phone is fitted with a 806 MHz processor making it unfit to run heavy games and applications. The phone starts to lag while running bigger games. The number of Applications and Games are very less as compared to iOS or Android. There are a few pre-installed games and the most useful feature in the phone is Blackberry Messenger (BBM). It is a social networking app that connects all the Blackberries together. You need to get your phone recharged with Blackberry Internet Service pack to get this app working.

Battery Backup

Blackberry Curve 9380 is fitted with a JM-1 removable/rechargeable lithium-ion battery. The battery used in the phone is good enough to work for longer durations. It gives a talk time of 5.5 hours and standby time of 15 days. The music playback time is up to 30 hours and video playback time is up to 5.5 hours.

Connectivity Offered

As expected from a Blackberry, Blackberry Curve 9380 offers you a wide range of connectivity options. It has W-Fi 802.11 b/g/n and the Wi-Fi manager takes care of all the connections. The quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE ensures connectivity everywhere. It is fitted with Bluetooth v2.1 for connecting it with other devices. It has a micro USB port for connecting the phone to the computer and charging. After a very long wait, RIM has introduced NFC in Curve 9380. The phone can be easily paired with other NFC enabled devices.

Compare

Blackberry Curve 9380 surely does not meet up to the expectations of the loyal BB users. Blackberry Curve 9380 has a stiff competition within the Blackberry range itself. Torch 9860 with a bigger screen and more advanced processor is very nice phone but is a little expensive. Within the range of Curve 9380, Cure 9360 is also a good option and it also has QWERTY keypad but lacks NFC. Coming out of the RIM world, LG Optimus 2x, Sony Xperia arc and Galaxy S plus are also a good choice. Offering a wide range of new features, they are a sure shot value for money deal.

News Updates

Blackberry Curve 9380 was launched in December 2011 along with its counterpart Curve 9360. It is the first ever touchscreen phone in the curve family and is supported by Blackberry OS 7. The phone carries RIM’s latest addition, Near Field Communication (NFC) technology.
