Blackberry Curve 9330 Review
BlackBerry Curve 9330 is a nice and fully loaded handset from RIM which needs no introduction due to its overall reliability. BlackBerry Curve 9330 is QWERTY smartphone with touch-sensitive optical trackpad. It supports both 2G and 3G CDMA network. Sporting a 2.46 transmissive TFT LCD light-sensing screen allowing user to select the font size of text on display. Running on BlackBerry OS 5.0, it gives an option to user to upgrade into higher versions while offering an improved multitasking agility. User can maneuver through multiple apps in fractions of a second. With BlackBerry Messenger, messaging can be done all day along and messsage delivered can also be checked.
Internal memory of BlackBerry Curve 9330 endows 512 MB flash memory and 512 MB SDRAM for practically unlimited entries and fields, with expandable memory support via microSD cards up to 32GB. BlackBerry Curve 9330 owns 3G, WLAN, Bluetoth and USB connectivity options, but lacks in GPRS and EDGE connectivity. The 2 mega pixel camera in the smartphone clicks the happy moments happily with a possibility of video recording. But the bar phone does not have a secondary camera for video calling. Along with 3.5mm stereo headset jack, the phone in also integrated with hands-free speakerphone. With built-in GPS and A-GPS, getting lost is a thing of the past. For safety and security issues, BlackBerry Curve 9330 features password protection with keyboard lock and an option of sleep mode.
Overall Review
Blackberry Curve 9330 is an entry-level decent smartphone available in black, pink, and red colors. It has a 2.46 inches wide touch display with the resolution of 320 x 240 pixels. Curve 9330 is fitted with a QWERTY keypad laid out with 20 keys and an optical trackpad which really makes it stand out as a typical BB device. In fact, this BB phone represents the new wave of Blackberry phones that despite their relatively cheap price offers fast internet and e-mail access, and also boasts of onboard GPS and enhanced multimedia features (with dedicated media keys) for a quality user experience. For meeting these requirements of users, they are served with a 3G network connection, enhanced Wi-Fi® capability plus navigation and location enabled services. The other most highlighted feature of Curve 9330 is its 2-megapixel digital camera with a fixed focus and 5X digital zoom, video camera featuring normal mode (320 x 240) or MMS mode (176 x 144) and support of the dual-band 800/1900 MHz and 3GCDMA2000® 1X frequencies with EVDO networks.
Blackberry smartphone users require a microSD card to use the video camera feature as it just has a 512 MB flash memory support. The entry-level smartphone, Curve 9330 also comes at a price to match its exquisite features. The overall length, width, and depth of the new Blackberry Curve 9300 are kept at 109 mm x 60 mm x 13.9 mm, respectively, and it weighs around 104 grams.
User Interface and UI functionality
The Blackberry Curve 9330 has higher Device Software 5.0 and this opearting software offered a whole lot of new features to its users. The stylish Blackberry Curve 9330 is very fast, easy to use, feature rich, and Blackberry OS 6 ready. The phone is loaded with the mobile operating system Blackberry OS 5, that is, upgradable and that assures enhanced multimedia and Internet support besides giving a whole new revamped look to its home screen.
In fact, the Curve 3G 9330 is not too different from the Curve 8530 and its GSM cousin Blackberry Curve 3G 9300 aside from a few external cosmetic changes. It goes to the credit of its makers that BlackBerry Curve 3G 9330 has a responsive optical touch pad, a slim profile, and external media keys. Call quality over the device is very good on the whole. Little or no distortion with loud and clear voice quality was experienced. It has good 3G coverage that rarely dropped out. The optical touchpad and overall navigation was quite smooth thanks to the 624 MHz processor of the phone and that also made it easy to launch apps. Sometimes it felt snappy but at least the transitions felt smooth.
Multimedia features
The multimedia features of the Blackberry Curve 3G 9330 are just about average. It has a music player with support for MP3, WMA, AAC, and MIDI file formats, plus there's a video player with MPEG4, WMV, H.263 and H.264 support. It’s on board 2-megapixel camera produce just okay still images. The audio quality over the speaker is fine, sound though lacked bass. It is recommended that a headset be used for better audio. It is quite admirable that dedicated music keys are present externally on this device.
Pictures and Video quality
The Blackberry Curve 9330’s camera unit is just an extension of the one present in Blackberry Curve 9300 with no serious improvements.
The picture and video results produced by the 2 mega pixels camera of Blackberry Curve 9330 are certainly not earth-shattering. It produces just mediocre quality stills at resolution of 1600 x 1200 pixels. There was little buffering while watching or streaming videos. Video quality was quite pixilated.
Internet support
The RIM Blackberry Curve 3G 9330 comes with Blackberry OS 5, easily upgradable to Blackberry OS 6. The new fangled OS promises that the Internet and web browsing experience on the phone is unique. A number of new improvements have been brought inside like a refurbished home screen, universal search, easier access to messaging, a new web kit browser, and more.
Internal and External Memory
Blackberry Curve 9330 has 512MB of flash memory support and there's also a microSD card slot that can accept up to 16 GB cards. It is clearly evident that the phone boasts both internal and external memory.
Applications and Gaming
The Blackberry Curve 9330 phone comes with a many apps and like most BBM devices these are business oriented. Apart from that, the phone offers V Cast Music with Rhapsody, music store, V Cast Video, and video streaming service. Users can get visual voice mail but for a monthly fee only.Other apps included with the phone are VZW Tones, ringtone store, and Bing. There are also a few games like BrickBreaker, Word Mole, Texas Hold Em, Sudoku, and Klondike. For more apps and games, one may log on to Blackberry App World.
Battery Backup
The RIM Blackberry Curve 3G 9330 has a 1,150 mAH lithium-ion battery with a rated talk time of 4.5 hours and up to 252 hours standby time. It has a tested talk time of 4 hours and 11 minutes though and also allows users to play music for over 15 hours at a stretch. The Curve 3G 9330 also has a digital SAR of 1.28 watts/kg and has a M4/T4 hearing aid compatibility rating.
Connectivity Offered
For connectivity, Blackberry Curve 9330 has GPS/A-GPS with VZ Navigator support, Wi-Fi (802.11 b/g), and stereo Bluetooth. GPS with other location-based apps can be used for geo-tagging photos. Professionals will appreciate the calendar, a memo pad, document viewers for Microsoft Office, Corel WordPerfect, PDF documents, and more.
The usual phone features like voice dialing, conference calling, speed dialing, a speakerphone, vibrate mode, and of course text and multimedia messaging are also on board. The Instant-messaging options include Blackberry Messenger, AIM, ICQ, Yahoo, and Windows Live. Continuing the RIM legacy of strong e-mail features, the Curve 3G 9330 can sync with Blackberry Enterprise server in addition to other e-mail systems like Microsoft Exchange, IBM Lotus Domino, and more popular ones like POP3 or IMAP accounts.
Compare
LG C660 Optimus Pro priced at approx. Rs. 11,199 is a popular Android v 2.3 based GSM device with 3G and Wi Fi support. It has a 2.8 inch capacitive touch screen and sleek body with 12.9 mm thickness. There is no color choice available with this device and it is available only in black color unlike Blackberry Curve 9330 which is offered in red, black, and pink colors. It has a very less internal memory with just 256 MB RAM support when compared particularly to Blackberry Curve 9330 which has 512 MB RAM. Optimus Pro boasts of a camera of 3.15 mega pixels that generate better results than 2 mega pixels camera of BB Curve 9330.
Yet, it is quite obvious that in mid-range smartphone segment, Blackberry Curve 9330 has an edge.
