BlackBerry Curve 9320 Review
There is some good real good news for the first time smartphone buyers who are looking for an affordable handset. RIM has come up with a really good looking, well-equipped and performance oriented phone, BlackBerry Curve 9320. Especially designed for the Indian market, BlackBerry Curve 9320 has everything to take the market by storm. Basically, BlackBerry Curve 9320 is a successor of previously launched Blackberry Curve 9220. It holds many similarities with that device in terms of design and internals. However, RIM has improvised the latest model to eradicate the drawbacks of the previous one. Henceforth, BlackBerry Curve 9320 is 3G enabled on it and also boasts a better camera.
On BlackBerry Curve 9320, there is 2.44 inches (diagonally measured) screen with QVGA resolution, physical QWERTY keyboard, optical trackpad and on top of it all, an integrated operating platform that is unbeatable. Yes, BlackBerry Curve 9320 has BlackBerry OS 7.1 with deeper BBM integration. In fact, there is also a shortcut key to access BBM on this device that is located on the left edge of the keypad. An array of sensors like digital compass (magnetometer), proximity and accelerometer sensors have also been given to BlackBerry Curve 9320 for making easy operations on its touch screen.
The phone sports the proprietary user interface and many features typical of every Blackberry device. There is 512 MB of RAM support and a hot swappable microSD card of 32 GB capacity can be used. The media features include a FM radio and a 3.2 megapixels camera. The camera of the phone is quite good and has flash, 4x digital zoom, geo tagging feature and capability to record videos. The EDOF (Extended Depth of Field) is one feature that has been introduced in the camera features to improve the quality of results drastically. For the connectivity purpose, many options are available too. There is Bluetooth, Wi Fi and 3G HSDPA/HSUPA network connection. The access to games and apps has also been hugely improvised on BlackBerry Curve 9320 and that can be owed to the use of advanced operating platform, Blackberry OS 7.1.
Considering that Blackberry has captured 15% of the market share in India, there is huge probability that BlackBerry Curve 9320 will be successful too. It stands just next to giants like Nokia and Samsung. There is the right mix of features on BlackBerry Curve 9320 that ensures that this device will be a success.
Overall Review
Research In Motion (RIM) launched yet another Blackberry OS 7.1 powered Curve, Blackberry Curve 9320, in May 2012. The Curve family of Blackberry is known for its cheap and affordable pricing and it made its debut in 2007 with the 8300 series. The latest launch of Blackberry, Blackberry Curve 9320 represents another one of Blackberry’s elegant and sophisticated models. It is the 3G variant of Curve 9220 that was launched in April 2012. Though Blackberry phones are always said to be a little over priced, yet they have a class of their own. Blackberry Curve 9320 carries huge responsibility on its head to put an end to the ongoing rocky phase of Blackberry in the market. Competing in the entry-level segment of the smartphone market, Blackberry Curve 9320 is priced smartly to challenge other phones in this segment. Equipped with the latest Blackberry OS 7.1, it showcases the few up gradations made from the previous OS 7. Carrying the traditional Blackberry styling and the very well known track pad, Blackberry Curve 9320 is an excellent launch in the familiar Curve family.
User Interface and UI functionality
Blackberry Curve 9320 runs on Blackberry OS 7.1, which is probably the last revision by RIM before the highly awaited BB 10. The BB 7.1 was released in the beginning of 2012 and does not bring any major changes from BB 7. Apart from a very little change in icons, Wi-Fi hotspot capability is the biggest addition. It features a 2.44-inches TFT LCD screen giving a resolution of 320 X 240 pixels and a pixel density of 164 ppi. The phone carries the trademark touch sensitive optical track pad, which is very efficient to use. The QWERTY keyboard is excellent with no issues at all while typing. It has an overall height, width and depth of 109 mm, 60 mm and 12.7 mm respectively and weighs just 102 grams because of its all-plastic construction. The phone is available in four different shades as well.
Multimedia features
Blackberry Curve 9320 is bundles with various multimedia features including a refreshed music player, sober looking gallery, FM radio and many others. Blackberry OS 7.1 features slight changes in the music player icons, rest everything is adapted from Blackberry OS 5. The phone does very well in terms of audio quality and unlike other Blackberry smartphones, Blackberry Curve 9320 produced very less distortions after plugging in the earphones. The video player performance is decent enough, and plays almost everything threw at it except 1080p videos. The gallery is similar to the one in Blackberry OS 6 and lacks built-in accelerometer. You can manually rotate pictures though. Picture zooming and navigation becomes handy with the use of optical track pad.
Pictures and Video quality
Blackberry Curve 9320 is fitted with 3.15-megapixel camera with LED flash. It gives a resolution of 2048 X1536 pixels and is equipped with various other features such as geo-tagging and image stabilization. It lacks autofocus, white balance and exposure compensation resulting in poor macro shots. The camera quality of the phone is poor. It records VGA videos at 30 frames per second. Video quality is fine in the VGA segment and definitely cannot be compared to 720p recordings.
Internet support
Blackberry Curve 9320 supports 3G, and was basically launched as a 3G variant of 9220. Like other Blackberry smartphones, Blackberry Curve 9320 does not support flash. The browsing experience is good and while navigating through the track pad, a virtual mouse cursor appears. When you zoom in, it takes a second or two to adjust the text.
Internal and External Memory
Blackberry Curve 9320 offers 512 MB internal memory, which is expandable up to 32 GB. The internal memory is definitely not enough for storing much data, but with the external Micro SD card, you can resolve this problem. 32 GB of space is quite enough for storing good amount of songs, games, applications, etc. The phone is equipped with 512 MB RAM.
Applications and Gaming
While using a Blackberry, you are obviously restricted to very less number of games and applications available on Blackberry App World. Blackberry App World has just about 100000 apps and games, which are very less as compared to 600000 apps of android and 700000 apps of iOS. Blackberry Curve 9320 comes with various built-in applications such as calendar, memo pad, calculator, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and various games such as BricBreaker and Word Mole.
Battery Backup
Blackberry Curve 9320 is equipped with a 1450 mAh removable/rechargeable lithium-ion battery that offers a talk time of around 7 hours. The standby time of the phone is up to 1 days and music playback time is up to 30 hours. The battery back up of the phone is quite decent.
Connectivity Offered
Blackberry Curve 9320 offers various connectivity options as demanded by modern day buyers. The Quad Band GSM/GPRS/EDGE offers connectivity all over the world ad 3G giver you extra speed. The phone uses Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n and Wi-Fi manager takes good care of all the connections. For connecting with other wireless devices, it is fitted with Bluetooth v2.1. It also has a micro USB port v2.0 for connecting the phone to the computer and also for charging. The phone also has a micro SD card slot for storing songs, videos, images etc.
Compare
For a Blackberry fanatic, the phone surely has some latest technologies added like OS 7.1 and the phone has some good new features that make the phone impressive in this category. But if you don’t have your heart set on Blackberry, you can definitely opt for something better. Sony Xperia Pro having a QWERTY keypad, 1 GHz processor and an 8-megapixel camera is heart throbber in this segment of mobile phones. HTC Chacha and Samsung Galaxy Y Pro are other QWERTY phones in this range that offer a stiff competition to Blackberry Curve 9320.
News Updates
Blackberry Curve 9320 stepped into the Indian mobile phone market today, that is 9th May 2012. The phone is supported by Blackberry OS 7.1 and is laying a foundation stone to the Blackberry’s most awaited OS 10. The phone is the latest of all the Curves, but definitely not the last.
