BlackBerry Curve 9220 Review
BlackBerry Curve 9220 is a decent handset available from a brand name like RIM. This is low- or mid-tier handset that company plans to bring in the market will sell at a discounted price straight away in India. It is quite exciting that though Blackberry Curve 9220 is a budget smartphone, it is offered in the same traditional form factor of BlackBerry phones. Besides, it ships with such an advanced and improvised operating platform also. Running on BlackBerry operating system 7.1, BlackBerry Curve 9220 offers no novelty in the design part, but like all other RIM handsets is a perfect choice for a first-line business executive. It is a typical BlackBerry prototype with a QWERTY keypad. It sports a small 2.44” screen only. Further, this new Curve 9220 has a 2 megapixels camera with video recording ability.
The internal memory specifications aren’t known but a microSD card slot is there on the device for fulfilling additional memory requirements. The phone’s memory is expandable to 32 GB. There is 512 MB worth of RAM as well. The available connectivity options are Wi-Fi, micro-USB and Bluetooth with A2DP. Blackberry Curve 9200 do not enjoy 3G support and buyers will have to rely on GPRS and EDGE network for using Internet and web browsing. The GSM network uses the dual band frequencies of 900/1800 MHz. Interestingly, this BlackBerry phone has good entertainment features. An audio player, video player and FM Radio are on-board for your entertainment. It also comes pre-loaded with 64 MP3 and polyphonic ring tones.
For the elite class, certainly the BlackBerry Curve 9220 isn’t that attractive. In fact, they may be totally put off by the idea that such a product is being launched by RIM. But the fact is that this is quite an intelligent approach that RIM has adopted. Launching such inexpensive phones will be quite profitable for them in the long run. When it arrives in the market scene, BlackBerry Curve 9220 will be a pioneering RIM device to take on the RIM’s range of low-end and budget offerings. This is a great step taken by RIM to take forward its expansion and sales in India. Now, this smartphone with such a brand name will be available to the ordinary people out here.
Overall Review
Blackberry is trying everything it can do keep itself afloat in this market of Smartphones. With the emergence of Android as an operating system for Smartphones, lot of companies had to face the brunt including Nokia and BlackBerry. The latter had to struggle more with the RIM's server breaking down, a sight no one thought they would witness. There are a lot of things that have changed in the recent times since the arrival of Android devices with touch screen becoming more popular as compared to QWERTY keypads. The BlackBerry Curve 9220 is a similar gadget that comes with the BlackBerry's signature QWERTY keypad. The device has a 2.44 inch screen, which is pretty small as compared to what is out there today at the moment. The there is also a Touch sensitive optical trackpad. RAM capacity is 512MB, which is pretty decent and there is a microSD card slot that allows the external memory to be expanded up to 32GB. As far as the dimensions of the device is concerned, it has a length of 109mm, a breadth of 60mm and a height of 12.7mm. The device weighs 102 grams and runs on the BlackBerry 7.1 operating system. It is available in a number of colors including Black, Fuchsia Pink, Pure White and Teal Blue.
The camera is of 2 megapixels strength, which works fine in terms of quality although there are other camera's with similar camera strength but with better quality of pictures. Multimedia features include a music player and a video player, which gives the user access to songs and videos and although the sound heard through the earphones or through the loudspeakers for that matter is pretty decent, the battery life that gets consumed in the process is not that substantial, something that was a problem with previous BlackBerry devices. The 1,450 mAh standard lithium ion battery is pretty decent and gives a decent amount of talk time and standby times. The Wi-Fi facility gives the user access to the web and download data or check his or her mails. Other data connectivity features include the Bluetooth facility, USB port, GPRS and EDGE technology. There is also a stereo FM along with the RDS technology that lets the user to record songs. Other significant features include Organizer, Document viewer, Voice memo/dial and a Predictive text input.
User Interface and UI functionality
BlackBerry Curve 9220 has a 2.44 inch screen that gives a modest resolution of 320 by 240 pixels and works at a pixel density of 164ppi. The screen can be interacted with through the QWERTY keypad or through the trackball navigation system.
Multimedia features
BlackBerry Curve 9220 has a music player that allows the user to listen to all the popular musical tracks that are compatible with the formats - MP3, eAAC+, WMA, WAV and FLAC player, whereas the video player that allows the user to watch videos supports the formats - MP4, H.263 and H.264 player. The music can be heard by the user through the loudspeakers or through the earphones that can be attached to the device with the help of a 3.5mm jack. The Radio FM feature gives the user access to the popular radio stations that is also backed by the RDS technology allowing the user to record songs as he or she goes along.
Pictures and Video quality
BlackBerry Curve 9220 has a 2 megapixels camera that allows the user to click pictures at a resolution of 1600 by 1200 pixels. There is no flash or autofocus facility with the device but the user can shoot videos. There is no secondary camera.
Internet support
BlackBerry Curve 9220 comes with the Wi-Fi facility that allows the users to connect with the web and download data including music files, games, images and videos. The user can also check his or her mails or visit the desired web sites including Facebook and twitter.
Internal and External Memory
BlackBerry Curve 9220 has a microSD card slot that makes sure that the device can be expanded in terms of external memory up to 32GB so that loads of data can be stored including songs, games, images and videos. There is also a 512MB RAM that lets the user access the resources of the system at a decent pace.
Applications and Gaming
BlackBerry Curve 9220 has lots of preinstalled games and apps but for those of you who are used to Android games and apps, the ones offered by this device would seem a lot bleak. Games have never been BlackBerry's strong point but same is the case with this device. Still more games can be downloaded from the web.
Battery Backup
BlackBerry Curve 9220 is powered by the standard lithium ion battery of 1,450 mAh that allows the user to operate on the device for a longer duration without being interrupted. The user then gets a talk time of up to 7 hours along with a standby time of up to 432 hours. Back to back music can also be played for up to 28 hours.
Connectivity Offered
BlackBerry Curve 9220 has lots of data connectivity features including the bluetooth facility which makes sure that the user can connect with other devices and download data including music files, games, images and videos. There is also the USB port that gives the same facility but via USB cable through which the device can be connected to computers and laptops. The user can also charge the device through the same process. Other features include GPRS, EDGE and Wi-Fi.
Compare
BlackBerry Curve 9220 when compared to Samsung Galaxy Ace has a smaller screen with the latter featuring a 3.5 inch screen whereas the former 2.44 inches. BlackBerry Curve 9220 has the QWERTY keypad for interaction with the device whereas the Samsung Galaxy Ace is a touchscreen device. Samsung Galaxy Ace also offers a better screen resolution than BlackBerry Curve 9220 but BlackBerry Curve 9220 is NFC capable, which is not the case with Samsung Galaxy Ace. Samsung Galaxy Ace has a 5 megapixels camera as compared to BlackBerry Curve 9220's 2 megapixels. There is no flash facility with the BlackBerry Curve 9220's camera while the Samsung Galaxy Ace does offer the same. Battery life offered by Samsung Galaxy Ace is also 48 percent more than what BlackBerry Curve 9220 offers.
News Updates
It is no secret that BlackBerry has been struggling for some time now especially since the last year, and even though devices like BlackBerry Curve 9220 were launched with great fervour, the Android devices took the market by storm again. BlackBerry is now hoping to change the scene with their latest launch of BlackBerry Z10. This would a make or break launch for the company and we hope for the former to happen for BlackBerry's sake.
