Blackberry Bold 9790 Review
Blackberry Bold 9790 comes with the dimensions of 110mm x 60mm x 11.4mm and weighs 107 grams. Its 2.45 inch TFT capacitive touchscreen gives a resolution of 480 by 360 pixels along with 16 million colours. The screen works at a pixel density of 245ppi and can be interacted with using the optical trackpad. The device offers loads of multimedia features including a music player that makes sure that the user gets to listen to all popular musical tracks that the entertainment world has to offer. The music can be heard by the user through the earphones that can be attached to the device with the help of a 3.5mm jack or he or she can simply use the loudspeakers. The user can also download videos and watch it in the formats of DivX/XviD/MP4/H.264/H.263/WMV.
The music player on the other hand is compatible with the formats MP3/WMA/WAV/eAAC+/FLAC. The device comes with 5 megapixel camera that lets the user click pictures at a camera resolution of 2592 by 1944 pixels with clarity and ease. The camera offers the users loads of features including autofocus, LED flash, Geo-tagging, face detection, image stabilization. The autofocus facility lets the user click pictures with complete accuracy and precision even when the hands of the user are shaky and trembling. The LED flash lets the user click pictures with clarity in the dark when the natural light is not satisfactory. There is also the facility for shooting videos but there is no provision for a secondary camera. The device comes powered by the BlackBerry 7.0 operating system which is backed by the Marvel Tavor MG1 1 GHz operating system.
The device comes with an 8 GB internal memory that makes sure that the user gets to keep loads of data in the device without worrying amount the memory space running out. In case the memory is still not enough the user can expand it upto 32 GB which is huge by all means. Various data connectivity features offered by the device include the Wi-Fi feature that lets the user connect with the web wirelessly and download data including music files, games, images and videos. There is also the bluetooth feature that makes sure that the user gets to connect with other devices wirelessly and exchange data with it. The USB port lets the user connect the device with their computers and exchange data with it. The device comes powered by the standard lithium ion battery of 1230 mAh that gives the user a standby time of Up to 432 h (2G) / Up to 408 h (3G) and a talk time of Up to 5 h 10 min (2G) / Up to 5 h 20 min (3G).
Overall Review
At first glance, the BlackBerry Bold 9790 looks like a typical BlackBerry handset meant for the business user or the textaholics- the famous full QWERTY keypad along with a solid form. It offers the user the best of both worlds- a capacitive touchscreen combined with a comfortable physical QWERTY keypad, although in a smaller form compared to the BlackBerry Bold 9900.
The Bold 9790 is the stripped-down version of the Bold 9900 featuring a smaller display at 2.45-in, a less powerful 1GHz processor and 768MB of RAM. The handset runs on BlackBerry OS 7 which is not really a big whoop though a significant improvement on the OS 6. The BlackBerry Bold 9790 sports a 5-megapixel camera, typical of most high-end BlackBerry handsets in recent times. The camera takes good pictures even in bad conditions, thanks to the LED flash. Unfortunately, HD video recording is not allowed. Overall, the BlackBerry Bold 9790 is short of the Bold 9900 in more than one aspect but it really doesn’t look that different, keeping in mind that the former is cheaper than the latter.
User Interface and UI functionality
If you’re a long-time BlackBerry loyalist, the user interface of the Bold 9790 should feel just like home to you. Unfortunately, if you’ve been using either an Android or iOS device, you are likely to feel frustrated with the interface on the Bold 9790. Its small icons and tiny elements give the user the feeling that the whole interface is simply too small for even a display as tiny as this one. Also the interface is far from intuitive, with a lot of wandering required before you figure out how to navigate through. The user experience feels a bit outdated but if you’re a BlackBerry enthusiast already, you shouldn’t have too many complaints. As expected, the e-mail experience is splendid and you also get a decent calendar for organizing your agenda. Of course, BBM is always there and is as good as it gets.
Multimedia features
You probably won’t want an alternative media player since the stock Music app handles the task very well, playing anything you may throw at it. Also, you get a really useful search bar that combs your music library for your search item and provides results in real-time. Functionality is great, with the volume rocker being able to not only adjust volume but also to switch tracks- even if the app is running in background mode.
Unfortunately, thevideo player is not much of a success since it struggles to play any video having a resolution that exceeds 800 x 480 pixels. However, it does support the DivX/ Xvid formats. And since you probably won’t be watching too many videos on a screen as tiny as this, you shouldn’t mind its poor handling of 720p video.
Pictures and Video quality
As the device features only a 2.45-inch screen, you probably will have to squint to see pictures clearly (merely exaggerating for effect!). As mentioned before, video quality is below par as the video player finds it difficult to play videos having a resolution of more than 800 x 480 pixels. And you can forget about watching 720p HD video since not only does it struggle through playback, you won’t really enjoy the experience on such a tiny screen.
Internet support
The BlackBerry Bold 9790 packs a decent punch when it comes to internet support. You can browse the Web either on Wi-Fi a/b/g/n connectivity or on its fast 7.2 Mbps 3G radio. Over and above that, your instant messaging needs are more than satisfied with the famous BBM pre-installed on the handset.
However, the browser is just above average. It sometimes lags while loading pages and moreover, does not feature support for Adobe Flash. Also, the text reflow functionality screws up at times, leaving out some of the paragraphs out of the display region. The optical trackpad comes in useful when you want to simply scroll around a webpage or to hover above certain page elements using the tiny cursor. Pinch to zoom and tap to zoom work very well.
Internal and External Memory
The Bold 9790 offers 8GB of internal storage, which can be expanded further by microSD upto 16GB. All in all, ample space for all your files and applications, though things would have been more roomy with 32GB microSD support.
Applications and Gaming
You will need to subscribe to the BlackBerry Internet Service in order to access most of the BlackBerry applications and services. Once you get that done, you will have access to all BlackBerry apps. Among the apps that come pre-installed on the Bold 9790 include Facebook and Twitter, Documents To Go, which is an easy way to handle most of the common document files, and even a file manager. In case BBM proves to be inadequate for you, you get many other IM clients like Windows Messenger, Google Talk and Yahoo! Messenger to ensure you have a thorough messaging experience.
Battery Backup
The BlackBerry Bold 9790 is powered by a 1230 mAh battery that will let you squeeze out around 5 hours of talktime. That is obviously no big whoop since you’ll get cheaper smartphones that will easily last much longer. In addition, you get 17 days of standby time which is more than enough for a phone of this category.
Connectivity Offered
RIM has done a pretty good job with the Bold 9790 as far as connectivity features are concerned. For connecting to the internet, you have the option of using either Wi-Fi a/b/g/n connectivity or 7.2Mbps 3G radio. Other connectivity features include Bluetooth 2.1, A-GPS, NFC support and of course, FM radio. Moreover, the handset supports mass storage mode so transferring files between your phone and your handset is a breeze.
Compare
The BlackBerry Bold 9790 is the stripped-down version of the BlackBerry Bold 9900 so it makes sense to put to see how they compare. First of all, the Bold 9790 features a smaller screen compared to the Bold 9900. Also, its processor, at 1 GHz, falls short of the Bold 9900’s 1.2 GHz processor. However, in other aspects, both handsets are literally head-to-head but obviously, at Rs. 23,800, the Bold 9790 is cheaper than the Bold 9900, which costs Rs. 30,350.
News Updates
RIM had announced the BlackBerry Bold 9790 back in November last year and then launched the handset in January this year. Around June this year, the company announced that the BlackBerry Bold 9790 will be getting the BlackBerry 7.1 OS update, which was rolled out in Sweden and in other countries across the globe.
