Mobiles phones now have become an important part of everyone's life and something that is undetachable to every human being. One cannot imagine, even a single person, not having a mobile phone whether it is a school going kid or a 60+ year old man. It has its own significance to different age groups and sections of the society, for instance, it can be termed, as a toy for kids while at the same time, is a necessity for the working class. Cell phones of the day are not what they were initially, like any other electronic gadget they too have gone through a long process of evolution. The huge improvement in technology has taken the cell phones to a different height, transforming the massive brick-like mobile phones of the 90s, to the sleek and classy smartphones of the day. What once was considered a luxury, is now available at dirt cheap rates for online shopping also. Yes, it might see, strange to some, but almost every mobile phone is available for online shopping, be it a cheap mobile in India for an expensive one. In fact, online shopping for mobiles in India have increased the popularity for the gadget.
The first cell phone was the result of yet another hard working innovator, Martin Cooper, who developed it in 1973, and was first sold in the market by Motorola. The company marketed it by the name of DynaTec Phone, but this device was not able to achieve any great sales. Though, the first commercial cell phones were available since 1979, it took 3 more years for any big brand like Nokia to make it commercially available.
In the year 1990, 2G technology was introduced, and that brought the digital cell phones into the markets. In the early 90s, mobile phones were huge, bulky and seemed more like what we call a cordless phone today. If we talk of them now, anyone would feel embarrassed to carry them, but back to the years when these were introduced, they were the craziest thing available. In 1993, there came text messaging and from then, the popularity of cell phones started to rise. The year 1997 brought an early attempt at bringing out a digital 'smart phone' by Philips. The company named it, The Synergy and the device was capable of providing wireless access to e-mail, internet and faxes. This device became the reason for the big digital revolution.
The later part of 90s saw many changes in the design as well as technology of the mobile phones. Antennas were shortened, and later they vanished altogether; designs were modified, better graphics, features upgraded and cell phones moved on, from the typical black color to being available in a variety of vibrant colors. Towards the close of 20th century, cellphones became a fashion statement that was high on demand. The year 2000 came up with the world's first touch screen phone in the form of Motorola's black and white touch screen device. The change in decade brought about advanced technology and a concept device by Panasonic that combined a game machine with a detachable hand unit that served as a mobile phone as well as game controller. The year 2002, marked another great year in the history of mobile phones, as there came the world's first camera cell phone with enhanced full color display. In the year 2005, Sony came up with the world's first Walkman phone, the W800i. It surely was an amazing phone that defined the whole Walkman series. The phone was thick but something very new for that time, built for delivering great music; it had dedicated buttons for music playback and Memory stick support, in all, a complete package for all the music lovers to enjoy their favorite tunes on the go. Then came the revolutionary gadget in 2007, Apple iPhone from the Apple Inc became the world's first advanced touch-screen smartphone that also ran on an operating system, the iOS. The operating system allowed different apps to run on the phone and made cell phones a primary device of use. Possessing an iPhone was considered a symbol of pride at that time. Talking of the recent past, we have seen enormous developments in mobile technology, ranging from high quality cameras to bigger screen sizes, better operating system to improved technology, and increased number of features to cell phones becoming lifeline.
